hello i am doing a satin stitch (( the first time )) around some heart appliques (200 of them) but my problem is i found the size i wanted set all the tensions where my manual said (with in the given area) after about sewing 4 of them it seemed my feed dogs would not feed the material so i took out my bobbin cleaned off my feed dogs and all around it started sewing again got 2 more hearts done and it stopped feeding again ?? i am sewing cotton appliques on cotton material put in a new sewing needle ?? any hints as to what and why this is happening?i was thinking of re adjusting a tension but then the hearts wont match they would be looser than the other ones i did .
hopeing someone knows about this |

Hi,
I was in live chat and now looking up some things for us to learn together. http://www.stitchemup.com/applique/satin-stitch.htm |

I hope these links will help you. I will see if I can find a video for us to watch. |
Wow just found this cool video to watch and be sure to watch all of her topics as she has different parts for the series.

thanks for all the links.

I haven't checked out the links yet. My suggestion is to lengthen your stitch and go around the applique twice. This will give a nice filled look and should make it easier for the machine to feed the fabric. You can make the first round of stitching slightly narrower, so that the second round completely covers the first.
|
I found that if you are setting the stitch length to close it will have a tendency to wad up under the feed dogs and it will not go anywhere. Like it was suggested just go around it a few times and you should be good.

by chance are you trying to sew over a seam when the problem starts?
ditter ;) |
What kind of presser foot are you using? When doing a satin stitch it is better to use an applique presser foot. The groove on the bottom of the foot allows the thicker zigzag stitch to pass under the foot without it getting bunched up---keeping your feed dogs feeding your fabric through smoothly.
Also, make sure that your stitch length is not too short---a short thick satin stitch will keep your fabric from feeding evenly. |
oops--sorry---double post!
|
Just ran across another tip that applies here. That is to use thin paper (such as tracing paper, or maybe the coffee filters that someone else mentioned) underneath the applique.
|
When using a satin stitch I use a stabilizer and I also make sure my foot has that little groove that allows for the bulk of the thread so it moves smoothly. good luck EM

Hi,
I was chatting with you the other night in live chat. How is your satin stitching coming along you were going to go back to your sewing room to try it again. Please let us know how you are coming along as I have posted some links for you as after we chatted I did some surfing. Karen |
