I am getting ready to satin stitch the appliques I put on a mini quilt. The colors are all pastels so I was wondering should I use black or would you use a color in each of the blocks. There are a lot of pinks in it. Oh aand a dark purple heart. I am doing it on the machine for the first time.
Darlene TIA

I usually use a color that is the same or close to the color of the fabric. If it's pink, I'll use a darker pink to stitch around it so it will stand out a bit.
I'd only use black if I had black fabric

I usually use the same color, but sometimes contrast is pretty. Show us a picture of the quilt. That would help.

I usually match the thread to the motif being appliqued. The only time I would use black is if the motif were black or if I was doing a primative art type pattern or was trying to imitate stained glass leading.

Can't wait to see the quilt!

What is the color of the background fabric? Black may be too contrasty or too jarring to the eye. I would pick a darker color from the applique pieces. But it depends on what style you want.

I like black when it is in buttonhole stitch. Not as overpowering (solid) as in satin stitch.

The background is WOW but I have started the stitching with different colors for each applique. I read in one of books that black is the way to go but I thought it was too harsh. It runs from purple, brown, ecru and pink.
Thanks for all of the info

The nice thing about YOUR quilt is that YOU can do it EXACTLY how YOU want it to be. Using the different colors sounds very pretty.
Don't forget to take/post pics.

Make sure you use either a tearaway stabilizer under the satin stitching or paper.

Hi, I use something veryclose to the applique. If I am using cotton or light weight fabric I just use issue paper as a stablizer. Also, varigated shades of thread are nice to.
