Does anyone use the Creative Foot called the Satinedge Foot for the 1/4inch seam on quilt pieces? I am just learning, so I know this topic has
been around and around, but I saw this foot, and it looked great, but it is expensive, too.

Well, life caught up with me somehow and kept me so busy for the past few months, I haven't done anything with the old quilt pieces - will try to pull them all out next week and "play" with them to see if there are enough for a project. I think my dd has some, too, but I am not sure.

My latest purchase has been a jellyroll (which I later read about and decided was too expensive to play with) so I am sewing the strips together to make squares and then use natural muslin between the squares (forgot the name of the pattern). If it turns out ok, I will post a picture later, but since I retired a few years ago, it takes me longer to learn or to accomplish my creative projects!!!

OK, what does a "satin edge" foot look like? :oops:

It's just one of the 3 Creative Feet (See "Creative Feet" thru Google, and it will go to their website), and a friend has it on her machine she uses for all of her quilting. It has a white side that sticks out from the stainless foot and presses against the edge of the quilt square, so then the needle is just 1/4" away from the edge if you set your needle on the lefthand side.
It seems to guide a longer piece of the fabric through the machine.

Oh yes, I can see how it would be great to use on quilts. Kind of expensive as I would have to buy the Bernina shank adapter -- but it looks like it could do so many things!! Have you used it yet??

Actually, I don't have one; a friend has it on her machine and loves it, so I think I will order one. I hope to hear from someone on this group who has used it, too.

I use moleskin to keep my 1/4" seam accurate. It works much better for me than any foot or gauge I have tried. Moleskin is found in the foot department of pharmacies; I like the thick stuff best. Basically I place my presser foot on a ruler and lower the needle until it is at a scant 1/4". I cut the moleskin into strips, remove the paper from the adhesive side of a strip, and place it on the bed of the machine aligned against the ruler edge.

One of the advantages of using a hard right edge like this is that it requires much less concentration to feed the fabric through the machine, and I can go much faster with this than I can with a 1/4" foot or by following markings.

I have one and only used it once... I honestly didn't care for it so much. I found it was just easier to keep my presser foot on the edge of my applique.

Great idea! I would love to see a picture of that upclose, too!

I wonder how that foot handles in curves. I have enough trouble with my regular feet (the ones on my machine). When I use the satin stitch on applique pieces, I need the flexibility to shorten stitch length and forward momentum in tight curves and wide curves. Not sure the foot would allow that either.

I have the set of Creative Feet and I absolutely LOVE the satin-edge foot for piecing........I can stay with an EXACT 1/4 in seam, or adjust it slightly for those ever so elusive SCANT 1/4 in seams.............I picked mine up at the Quilt Expo last year..........and I think they have been more than worth the cost.............She also guarantees these........so if you get them, try them, and are not happy, you can return them........check out her website....Hope this helps!!

Great instructive site, videos for all and it shows the curved seam with the foot going much easier than when I pin the heck out of it. I may have to investigate further on this one. Thanks for the tip!

Lulie, I know what you mean. I think it has to do with our keeping too busy with so many things that we didn't have time to do when we worked at our jobs. Consequently we get overwhelmed and don't accomplish what we want.

I bought one with the guide on it and after 3 seams broke that piece OFF...it always hung up :lol:

Well, maybe I will just use the moleskin and my "Little Foot"!!!!!

Thanks so much for the tip about moleskin!! I went to Walmart and the pharmacist showed me where to find it (with the Dr. Scholl foot supplies).
This afternoon I cut a small long piece and placed it 1/4" all the way down from the "little foot" with the 1/4" side, and I can't tell you how wonderful it is!!!! It is thick enough to guide the strips right through and it makes my four-patch squares so easy to do!!!! I love it!!!

I broke it off on purpose :P It was a pain and I like to use a scant 1/4" anyway and I just didn't like it on there...works good now :P

It shouldn't hang up on anything.... sounds like something was off... ?

To accomplish a 1/4" seam using the Satinedge foot, you simply do the following.

1) Attach the foot to your machine (fits ALL zig zag sewing machines)
2) Place a measuring tape beneath the foot.
3) Lower the needle in the LEFT needle position so that it hits one of the lines on your measuring tape.
4) Lower the foot down onto the measuring tape.
5) Turn the adjusting nut on the foot until the guide PIN is on the line that you desire 1/4" or scant or any other measurement from 1/16" up to 1/4"

AS you sew be sure to NOT hold your hands in front of and behind the foot. You need only use 1- finger on the left hand and gently persuade the fabric to stay on the left side of the foot.

NEVER watch the sewing machine needle again but rather watch the WHITE (easy to see) guide and you will sew faster and more accurately than with any other foot.

This foot was designed for a woman that was blind - it does this guiding so well because of the PIN (DO NOT REMOVE GUIDE OR PIN) or the foot will not perform as it was designed.
