Saw a Civil War Quilt Display Today

I saw a very interesting display on Civil War quilts made in Illinois at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield. It not only had quilts but also explained the role women played during the war to make quilts and comforts, sell fundraiser quilts for the war effort and make uniforms. There was a lovely log cabin quilt made after the war that included parts of uniforms from both Union and Southern soldiers. The woman who made it had sons fighting on both sides of the war, one was killed. I like history so I really enjoyed this display.

This exhibit just opened in February and runs through Sept. 8. If you decide to go, plan time to visit some of the the Abraham Lincoln sites and Presidential Museum if you enjoy history.

I wish I could go there. I'm interested in that time period because both maternal & fraternal great great grandfathers fought in that war. I have a lone star quilt, vegetable dyed, that my great great grandmother made that was quilted around 1863. It has been handed down to me.

I often visited this exceptional museum when I traveled through Illinois and found their exhibits a great learning experience. I will have to make another trip to Illinois soon. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the link--a great way to pay tribute to our Civil War families no matter what side they were on. A heart wrenching era in our country's history.
