I have never tried the Quilt Wizard foot, but I do swear by my quarter inch foot and would never make another quilt without it. I say the same thing to my students.
Cheers Andrea |
Like Quilting Aggi, I haven't tried the Quilt Wizard foot and I like my quarter inch foot too, because it makes it much harder for the seams to be larger than that.
|
I use a magnet since my machine isn't computerized, but I have to remeasure and recheck everytime I take it off. Pain!

judging by the responses every time this subject comes up, it seems most quilters prefer their quarter-inch feet. i'm not particularly crazy about them. i have tried several different models and keep going back to my favorite all-purpose. i must point out, though, that i'm able to set my needle to a bazillion positions to the left or right of center. when i want a standard or scant quarter inch. i don't switch feet. i change the needle position.
here's a review of the Quilt Wizard. it sounds like a very interesting little gadget. You will probably be glad you ordered it. I gasped at the price until i read the review and found out it's actually one foot with two different adapters. One for quarter inch; the other for in-the-ditch. That maks the price-per-foot about average compared to most I've seen. http://www.quiltersreview.com/article.asp?article=/review/product/020204_a.asp Brother also makes a pretty neat quarter inch foot. it has a nice wide footprint that helps control the fabric as it feeds over the dogs, but still provides a fairly accurate guide. It's a standard snap-on, so would work on most machines. I'm tempted to buy one just because it's so nifty. http://www.brother-usa.com/Homesewing/Accessories/accessorydetail.aspx?R3AccessoryID=SA125 |
I also use the regular foot, but I move the needle to the right position.
When I use a Quarter inch foot, the fabric has a tendency to drift to the left because it's not pushed along on both feed dogs but rather just the left one. |
Hey, Cathe. I'm betting you do just fine with your system. If you are in the market, though, for a quarter-incher that covers both dogs, the Brother foot i showed the link to is shaped in a way that provides a nifty quarter inch reference, but is wide enough to feed using both dogs.. Take a look. (nope. i promise. they aren't paying me to sell this foot. the one i've tested belongs to a friend of mine. )

Can I use a Brother 1/4 inch foot on a Bernina?
|
I have a 1/4 inch foot for my Bernina, made by Bernina. I think there are feet you can purchase for you Bernina to adapt the feet of other brands, but they cost every bit as much as the 1/4 inch foot.
The Bernina foot sews right in the middle, both feed dogs are utilized and the seam sews straight. I love mine and won't sew on a quilt without it! M |
Mine isn't 100% accurate to the scant quarter so I've had to adjust things anyway. If I had one that was exactly on, I'd imagine it a marvel. When I stop to think of all the wonderful quilts made without one, it all falls into perspective.
|
I have a 1/4 inch foot for my Janome and am well satisfied w/it. Before I got it my seams were not accurate
|
Okay, I'm gonna open a big can of worms, but I have always wondered. If I use the same foot all the time, and I don't care if my quilt is 2" smaller when I finish, why do I need to worry about this scant quarter of an inch?? Huh? Why? I understand if one is swapping blocks, but otherwise, please tell me.
|
If all you ever sew is squares or log cabins, you will be fine. As soon as you start getting into more comples patterns, however, it DOES make a difference.
|
I guess I see it. Like if your pattern has pieces that cross a seam, LIKE why my Flying Geese never turn out good?!! Okay, darn it, I'll use it then. Thanks, Cathe!
|
I have the brother 1/4 inch foot and I'll swear by it. I use it for every project and my squares always come out just right, as long as I pay attention and don't let my material drift. I make lots of flying geese projects and don't have a problem with them.

Help !!!!!! Just tried to go to Quilt Wizard site on ebay....not what I was looking for. Did I do something wrong? I REALLY need that little "helper". Thanks
ALfie |
I think you would like a 1/4 inch foot! I would try and get one for your machine, if the manufacturer makes one.
I love mine 'cause I don't have to think, just sew. I would like one with the guide, though, and am thinking of getting it. |
I bought my quarter inch foot at my neighborhood sewing machine/vacuum repair shop. We have two in our town and they really are a godsend, can fix your machine and carry all the different brands of feet and machine parts. Maybe there is a shop hiding in your town as well.

I might be sticking the spool in my mouth...but, have to say that I 'cheated' on my 1/4"!:0)I will when I can ever remember to...buy a 1/4" foot for my machine. Until then, I used a ruler to mark the exact 1/4" and marked my foot w/a marker perm. pen:))I tried that sewing tape and it did work for awhile, but, one would need to put packing tape over it to keep it from wanting to roll after awhile.:))So, here is a cheap solve for awhile:))Skeat

1/4" is good but this Scant 1/4" is a pain plus I don't think the thing will hold up in the wash at least not around here!!!
|
My 1967 Singer touch and sew has a presser foot that is almost exactly 1/4 inch at the edge of it. It works for either side of the foot so I consider myself lucky to have it and not have to adjust anything. It was probably just coincidental that it was made that way because 1967 is before quilting became popular.

i don't think anyone has implied that everyone must have and use a quarter-inch foot. they're just sharing their success stories with those who are thinking of getting one for themselves. except for the brother foot i mentioned earlier, i have been totally unimpressed and underwhelmed by every quarter-inch foot i've tried. (luckily, they were all included with my machines. i'd have been pretty irritated if i'd bought them for extra cash. ) so many people enjoy using them, i've decided that my own disappointment with them must just be another one of the many ways in which i'm an incurable oddball. |
You right Patrice, It is not cheating, You do whatever trips your tirgger so you can get thatt darn 1/4 inch. :D I just love gaggets. and I have a little trouble when I get to the end of a piece.

I loooooooooove gadgets!! The Quilt Canada Convention will be here in St. John's this June and I can't WAIT to go to the Merchant's market to see what new gadgets and gizmos I can pick up this year!!! hee hee

This has been a very good discussion on 'feet':))Glad everyone has had an opinion, for we all need that input:0)I do think it would be easier to always have a clear guide to where the 1/4" is. And, for me...always!:))You are so right about the fabric!:))Actually, I might have good intentions to buy one...only get too overwhelmed w/all the new fabric, patterns, etc. Only to return w/a new nest egg and no foot!:))One of these days...:))Well, maybe:0)Skeat

Thanks Patrice.....I am ALL Brother, and very happy with all they have to offer..... |
