Scissors...How many?

Just bought my first good pair of scissors after 20 years of quilting! 5inch ginghers which are still in the mail...Here's the thing, I keep looking at the other sizes and wonder....

What are your top 3 size scissors which are always within arms reach of your project? I am curious....I dabble in sewing as well. Advice greatly appreciated.

I keep a pair of regular (8"?) scissors near my cutting board and another pair near my ironing board. Then I have smaller scissors in those two places, plus a pair near my sewing machine, another small pair on a lanyard that hangs near my sewing machine when I'm not wearing it. One more small pair is in a cute little box in the family room to use when I'm sewing while watching TV. Near the cutting table and ironing board I also keep pairs of scissors to be used on paper (since I make greeting cards also), so that I don't use the fabric scissors when in a hurry. Then, we also have all-purpose scissors at the desk and in the kitchen (which are labeled so they hopefully return to their proper places). Well, then I have a pair of small scissors in my nightstand, and in the bathroom. Is this too much information?

You just confirmed I need to buy more! LOL.

soccertxi 03-09-2013 06:14 AM

You mean you want me to COUNT? I have a thing for scissors! I keep a pair by the ironing station, one by the cutting board, about 3 by the sewing machine/serger. One on each side of the long arm, one on top, one by the batting...then there is one with my knitting, one (or two?) in my applique bag...I think you get the drift! Maybe I am related to DJ?
I didn't even GET to the pairs I have in the kitchen..we used to have about 5 or 6 pairs of those camping scissors that can do everything from cut and strip wire to be a magnet and open a bottle. I love that I can take those apart, so they get used in the kitchen ALOT. :::hanging head:::: I think I'm addicted....:::cheesy grin::::

patchsamkim 03-09-2013 06:14 AM

I am sure I have over 20 pair of scissors...haven't counted them though. I have Fiskars...the ones with the springs..they are easier on my hand for cutting....I have them in the small size, full size, and pinking shears.
I have Ginghers in the full size, embroidery size, and applique scissors. I have Dovos in many varieties...they are so sharp....at least 4 of them. I have several pair of paper scissors. I have a couple pair of scissors I got from my MIL when she passed away.....not sure what kinds they are. I have several pair of cute small embroidery scissors-like cats, patriotic. I have other different scissors that I have bought over the years-don't remember the brands now. Also have kitchen scissors.

Oh, you asked the top 3....my full sized Fiskars, my Ginghers, and a Dovos pair with handle I really like.

michelleoc 03-09-2013 06:18 AM

I have a few scattered throughout my sewing room, yet when I need them I can't find them! I think they hide from me.

donnajean 03-09-2013 06:33 AM

I have a drawer full of good scissors I never use. I even have my Gingher scissors from the 60's. I keep a pair of 6 or 7" scissors at the sewing machine for cutting threads. Otherwise, the rotary cutter does most of my cutting.

Lori S 03-09-2013 06:40 AM

I have lots of scissors. Each pair has its own specialty ... one pair cuts button holes the best , another for batting, one pair for applique .. the list goes on. It always seems they are never where I need them. I finally made a ribbon necklace and wear my thread scissors then around my neck when I am in my sewing room.

francie yuhas 03-09-2013 06:49 AM

I have cheapo scissors scattered all over,so when DH wants some they are handy and he isn't tempted to even think about us using my ginghers! I keep others in with my projects, near my sewing machine, and,of course, well hidden!

vanginney 03-09-2013 06:49 AM

Ok...lets re-phrase this question another way....since y'all have so many scissors. If you were stranded on an island and could only take 3 pairs...what 3 sizes would you bring? :)

nativetexan 03-09-2013 06:49 AM

I have about six or eight pair. all Gingher I think. all orange handles. except for the ergonomic ones, gray and black with orange lock-usually see those at cutting tables in fabric stores.

mgmsrk 03-09-2013 07:07 AM

I have many, I don't know how many. ;)

The must have..........If I had to just keep a few
8" spring action Gingher
10" Gingher Tailor's
8.5 Fiskers Dressmakers
9 Fiskers dressmakers
Assorted embroidery
non fabric scissors for cutting paper and other stuff
Pinking shears

On top of those I like to keep embroidery scissors and a full size at each sewing machine (2 sm's, cover stitch and serger) along with scissors in each of my mending baskets.

Good scissors, like any tool go a long way to making sewing easier. I LOVE my big tailors, they will cut through so many layers with ease and snip right to the end,no catching the fabric between the blades and just stretching it in place of snipping. The problem is that they are very heavy so I don't want to cut with them all the time. I love my spring action Gingers but they too are heavy, that is where the Fiskers come in, plastic grips so less weight but they have a wonderful blade.

I have big scissors, 1 in my sewing box, one in my quilt tote, one in another tote that I use for my hand piecing projects. I have a smaller pair also in my sewing box, and an pair of stork embroidery scissors I use for my counted cross stitch. I love Ginghers. I had a pair when I began home ec sewing classes in 8th grade. Not sure what happened to them, but I don't seem to have them any longer.

Well, I would want on that island my Fiskars 8" and 4" (not sure of the lenghts) and my stork embroidery scissors. And a general all purpose scissor to cut everything else!!!!

yweinst 03-09-2013 07:20 AM

I have a large scissors for fabric, a large scissors for paper (for my freezer paper and such for applique), and I have a very small scissors for small details for my applique.

vondae 03-09-2013 07:33 AM

I love my 8 inch Ginghers for when I am making clothes for the grandbabies. But, my absolute favorite & most used are my small 4 1/2 inch & very sharp, embroidery scissors. I have several of these (mostly Ginghers) and use them all the time. I have a pair on a lanyard to wear around my neck when I am sewing binding, etc. I have a pair at my sewing machine, I have a pair in my embroidery bag & I usually have a couple more pair hanging on my peg board. That's if I haven't used them & laid them down some place. I also, usually have a pair or 2 still in the package ready to be put into use, if need be. When Joann's puts them on sale for 50% off, I buy a pair ( ginghers, that is). Those are pretty much the only 2 sizes I use. Oh, I almost forgot, I also use my pinking shears when making clothes or for trimming fabric getting ready to wash it, for my quilts. Here's to always having a sharp pair of scissors on hand. Vonda

I seem to collect scissors and knives. If I had to choose which scissors to bring to a desert island, it would be my 2" sharp point embroidery scissors for cutting threads and unsewing, 4" blades for cutting the triangles off when making snowballs, and 6" blades for dressmaking. As for knives, don't even get me started - I'm addicted to Thai Kiwi knives.

Nammie to 7 03-09-2013 07:41 AM

Scissors are like fabric - you can never have too many. I have them everywhere I work so I don't have to search when I'm working. Only three? That will never happen here.

irishrose 03-09-2013 08:10 AM

The lightweight Ginghers with the black plastic handles, then a small pointed pink pair - I think mine are Mondial and a good pair of snips, which just broke last night. I can count at least ten, but these are the three I use the most.

mighty 03-09-2013 08:18 AM

I have alot, not sure I could pick just 3.

rebeljane 03-09-2013 08:23 AM

I have one pair of scissors and a couple pairs of snippers for cutting threads.

pollyjvan9 03-09-2013 08:29 AM

If stranded on an island?...I would take 5", 3" and a small curved tip embroidery pair. I am not going to count my scissors!

sjscribe 03-09-2013 08:38 AM

I have:
One fabric scissors
One multi-purpose scissors

I've thought about purchasing small embroidery scissors but so far have managed without them.

DOTTYMO 03-09-2013 08:43 AM

I have loads cheap and expensive. I find sometimes the cheap are better . I also have plenty of small scissors with good points for snipping.

Dolphyngyrl 03-09-2013 08:51 AM

I have TMTC
I have my gingher 8in , gingher 8in lightweight, gingher 4inch embroidery, gingher curved embroidery, gingher applique, fiskars spring action, fiskars pinking, kay buckley serrated, 4 or five several offbrand small scissors and threadsnips really I stopped counting after 10. I use them all though so no one can say I have too many

crafty pat 03-09-2013 08:56 AM

I have so many as I also sew clothing. My most used ones are my 8 inch and the most used are my very sharp small ones I use for fussy cutting and clipping threads and other small things. I love them so much I bought a pair for my sewing box, handwork box and one for each machine so I will always have a pair handy at all times.

nativetexan 03-09-2013 09:15 AM

Oh silly me, i typed Gingher but definitely meant FISCARS. i was just sewing and looked at my scissors. Fiscars is the brand i have had for years. love them.

momto5 03-09-2013 07:17 PM

The Gingher 5" ones are my favorite...each time I go to Hancock's I pick up another pair...:) Yep, I'm addicted too! I have about 50 pair or so, but criticism is NOT warranted....in my working life I needed them, lots of them...y-e-e-e-s-s-s-s-s-s! SSSSSSCCCissors!!!!!!!! And besides that, I love them, so there!

Scissor Queen 03-09-2013 07:34 PM

Mmmmm, scissors. There's around 100 pairs in this house. All kinds of scissors. I'm never more than 6 feet from a pair of scissors in most of this house. I have Fiskars, Ginghers, Dovo, Mundial, Solingen, Bohin and lots of no name scissors. I have scissors that cost less than a dollar to scissors that cost $80 bucks for one pair.

I have every color of the little embroidery scissors quilt stores have on the counter. They're like crack, small and cheap.

But if I was stranded on an island I'd want the crazy Chinese scissors and the pair that'll cut pennies. They'd be the handiest.

In my avatar pic there is $350 dollars worth of scissors.

lclang 03-10-2013 05:48 AM

I have a whole box full of scissors, all sizes and lengths, regular and pinking. Several pairs of Ginghers, but someof the cheaper ones seem to work as well. Have them scattered all over the house so they are always handy.

Vicki I 03-10-2013 06:20 AM

Only 3 pairs, Yikes that's a scary thought. LOL regular size, embroidery size and paper scissors.

Oh Goodness! I have scissors everywhere in my sewing room. Too many to count. I have all brands and sizes. The very best scissors I have are Nogent Scissors, hand made. My grandmother and great aunts always had Nogent scissors in their sewing baskets. I got my Nogents when I graduated high school from my great Aunt Doris. I really like the new batting scissors, they cut batting like butter and no hang ups when cutting through.
