Scrap Quilt Patterns needed

I bought lots of scrap fabrics from an estate sale. They are nice quality fabrics and some are more vintage looking (like old fashioned flowers). Anyway, I am looking for some scrap quilt ideas to make scrap quilts. I don't want to just make quilts with
2 1/2 " squares just sewed together for the whole quilt top. I would like to have some ideas to use some bigger pieces. Any ideas. Show me your scrap quilts or the name of scrap pattern ideas.

Well, this sounds like fun. So I'm thinking what you are describing are likely to be flour sack or 30's prints, but we've had posies and roses and all sorts of florals every decade, some of which looked vintage when they were new. Can you find search around a bit on the those terms (flour sack, 30s fabric) and see if that is similar or if we have something else to work with?

Flour sack/30s style fabrics typically go together well because of their scale, collection of colors, and values make them easy to work with as a group. They tend to lend themselves to being paired with crisp white or pastel solids.

There are a couple of theories in scrap quilts, one is looks don't matter, I'm making a blanket to keep someone warm and I want to get rid of fabric. The other is that looks do matter and I'm trying to use my leftover fabric in the best possible way. They aren't entirely mutually exclusive but in the end, you get what you get and you had the choice at the start.

In addition, I say the "quilt we makes depends on the fabric we have" so I have different design considerations when I'm using a stack of swapped 10" (layer cake sized) squares, or whether I have actual scraps saved from garment construction, or yardage. When you say "some of the bigger pieces" is that bigger or smaller than a fat quarter?

I mostly work with scraps or at least collections of fabrics, which is sort of funny because when I started quilting I had never seen a scrap quilt I liked but was all about the planned quilts as I call them now. The book Scrap Quilting by Judy Martin really changed my eyes and mind to what was possible. The book is out of print and the instructions are dated now, but the pictures and discussions well worth a used copy!

Some people really like Bonnie Hunter's projects --
https://quiltville.blogspot.com/

There are a number of us here on the boards who do a lot of donation projects, and many of those are scrap based. Can spend a lot of time getting a lot of ideas on projects here, so much so I've given up magazines because I get more ideas from the people here! Usually doesn't take me peeking in on more than 10 threads on the pictures forum and I've got at least one new idea :)

I do a lot of scrappy quilts some of my favorite are a bit more complicated that other. like the Cathedral Windows. A great scrappy quilt. In my album there are 8 scrappy quilts you can look at. Of course these are just the tip of what I have done. Take a look here https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...bums20172.html. Some that are real easy and fun are Rail Fence and Tumbler blocks. Fun and easy for both of them. Any quilt square can be adapted into a top to become a scrappy quilt. Sometimes each block is different in fabrics and sometimes each piece is different. For me the scrappyer the better. I am now working on a 2 1/2" square scrappy batik quilt. I had all these 2 1/2" strips from a swap and they are becoming a beautiful top. Have fun that is the best part of all.

You might find something you like on the scrappy quilt show thread here.

Also, many of the Mystery Quilt Train Rides lend themselves to scraps.

Nice quilts. I have also done a cathedral windows scrappy. I really like the look of them but a bit more time consuming. I am looking for something that is quicker to make.

Hey, Aborning, I'm using today to finally add a picture album to my profile, currently working on putting in the unfinished tops. I don't really want to know how many there are but it's good for me I guess...

Check in on me in a bit, other than that I get most of my ideas from the Pictures forum and the other people in the Fabric Moratorium thread... here's last year's to quickly browse and see what some folks are doing.

While I'm plugging away, maybe Julia can tell us more about the albums, it is something I have so far neglected here on the boards.

You might want to check out Pinterest. When I am stumped for what pattern to use with scraps I go to Pinterest and they have lots of ideas. I just type in "scrap quilts" and you will get a sight that shows scrap quilts and some will give you the patterns. Good luck to you

Iceblossom 04-28-2020 08:20 AM

Whew! I am worn out but these are all my unfinished tops. Does not include works in progress, or a couple of thrift store tops that I didn't piece. This was my first time deliberately visiting someone's album much less setting up one for myself.

Here's a link to mine, you will see only a couple "planned"/fabric limited projects in there.
https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...bums20314.html

Or, you can click on the member's name and view if they have an album set up under their public profile. For me, albums are to the center right of screen.

I'll set up a finished album at some point but I think I want to start sewing now :)

Thanks for all the ideas.

How about a pineapple? Just keep the center square and the 2nd round fabrics the same for continuity.

A QB tutorial on Boxes of Strings was a fun scrap pattern. Bonnie Hunter has lots of scrap patterns under her free pattern tab at Quiltville.

Iceblossom, I always love reading your answers no matter what the question as I always learn something new!

I'm not a scrappy quilt fan but my friends who are love Bonnie Hunter. You might check out her web site.

Try a scrappy log cabin, they turn it really neat when you don’t follow the rules

Iceblossom 04-28-2020 04:55 PM

You mentioned that you didn't just want to sew little squares together, but in case you do have a lot of little squares, some people did some fun stuff in the Scrappy Irish Chain Sew Along

Another site that i use often is Weddingdressblue. Good clear photos in her tutorials and so many free patterns. Many are 2Inch squares but they easily translate to 2.5 in. I have made about 6 of her patterns and currently working on a baby quilt using the Star Kissed pattern. Love the results from all of the patterns. My avitar is a version of Growing up Odd from WDB. Take a quick wander for some good ideas. https://weddingdressblue.wordpress.com/tutorials/

1) a Dresden. I used contrasting scrappy with a consistant white background and the same dark brown inner circle. Came out magnificent.
2) big squares and little squares. This is a free manufacturer pattern called Honeybell.(I think) key for this would be a controlled color palette and consistent sashing
3) 16" stars. The centers are all 8.5. Keep consistent colors on the 4.5 star points and you can do whatever you want on those insides. 16 2.5 squares. Or larger fabric with bigger pattern. Diamond in square? Strips? Maybe even fussy cut. Sashing is 4.5 and I also used 4 patch cornerstones because this was for my mother.

I hope this helps!

Lots of ideas.

Sounds like fun. I’d sort them by color or design then proceed.

luvstoquilt 04-29-2020 06:04 AM

Love quilted twins patterns!

QuiltMom2 04-29-2020 06:11 AM

I've been doing strip quilts: how many variations can you come up with? Also doing 2.5" square in a triple Irish Chain. The scraps still reproduce somehow.

Good selection of Villa Rosa patterns available on eBay.

Arkansas Crossroads is the one I have in progress now, but you'll need a background fabric.

I've made a couple like that, and it is great to just grab a piece and sew. Really great looking quilt.

illinois 04-30-2020 03:06 AM

Have the fabrics 'spoken' to you yet? What era are they and what would that time have told you to do? Do you applique or piece? Some of the older quilt designs might have been used but with the flower designs you mention, I'm wondering about putting those into something such as Grandmother's Flower Garden or one of the butterfly quilts that were popular. Having scraps may be a blessing as each block can be different.
