beautiful quilt i love log cabins also great colors
|
Great job! One thing that really makes for a great scrap quilt is some colors that ties it all together and you did it with the red centers, the teal strips and the light colored backgrounds contrasting so well with the darker strips. Love it. Goes to show you, contrast does the work and color gets the credit!

I belong to a group that does a block exchange every 3 months. I am always looking for a new way to use up scraps. The fact that I love the quilts that result is just a wonderful bonus.
|
Thanks butterjoy for that question. Wanted to ask it myself, and watterside for the picture. That looks beautiful. Also thanks to BellaBoo for the recommendation.
|
Great job!!!

Scrappy quilts are the best thing to bring the stash back into control. It seems any and all fabrics, no matter how "ugly" will always turn out colorful and cute.
My current project is to use up most of my stash making scrappy nap (55"-60" x 75"-80") size quilts for donating to the Vets thru the BPOE (Elks). The one thing I do need to occasionally purchase is more background lights because I have only a small stash of those. |
I am looking for a "scrappy" blended 9 patch. An area quilt guild, Bay Area Quilt Guild in Pearland, TX. recently used it in their scrap bee, but I cannot get my hands on the pattern.
I hope it is not inappropriate to ask if anyone has this pattern. Lucille A |
Do you have a pic or can you link to a pic?
|
I love a scrap quilt! the more fabrics the better! a few great patterns for scraps are ( in my opinion) log cabin, nine patch, broken dishes, four patch, pine apple , irish chain, any kind of a sampler, school house, square in square, strippy..... I could go on...
|
No, I wish I could. But it has to be available somewhere. I will week looking, and share when I find it.
|
Lucille, i don't know what you mean by a blended 9 patch..need an example..
|
Went on Ebay and bought a bunch of 2" squares for the fun of it - put them in a bag and pulled out two at a time and came up with a darling miniature quilt (12"/12") Trying to get over the "everything has to match" syndrome...it worked, now if I can just keep it up! Scrappy is cool!

I like it Corky! that is what i would think it would look like.
Cheryl, good for you girl! I have a friend who has tried to make a couple string blocks,scrappy..and she just hates it..but she always comes through for me, when i am making a quick chairty quilt to give..! lol! she is a perfectionist..and it is so hard for her to make things like this..I totally understand, mind you..but what mindless freedom to wrok on something like this! it is a nice break from the norm! |

If you have eq 6 software with block base, it is similar to 1605, with a slightly different coloration. It is called a nine patch chain. I tried to contact my friend again today to get her to send me a picture of the blocks--there are 2 that have similar coloration that blend to make the quilt. I will keep looking, and share the pattern when I get it.
|
I use a Mac and the interface software for EQ is too pricey for me. I do have Quilt Pro, although I haven't really become very skilled at it yet :)
|
I know what you mean. I am tired of PCs and would like to try a Mac, but all my software is geared to the PC.--I will send you copy of the pattern when I get it.
|
I love my Mac and have used both extensively. I hate that some of the software is not compatible, although most is. Thanks!

Hi,
I've been trying to figure out how to put together all my unmatching scraps also, and in looking at some other scrap quilts, I notice a "grounding" color. Like the postage stamp quilt shown, I think I will use a white to ground my scraps. |

After I finished cutting all my scraps into 2 1/2 inch strips and 5 inch squares and 2 1/2 in squares I took all the leftovers and made this quilt. my only 2 rules were not putting the same fabric right next to each other and I wasn't allowed to change the fabric I was grabbing out of the basket otherwise. If that makes sense.

Haven't found pic ------have you posted ,will be interested to see.

This is my latest scrap quilt. It is all greens and whites or offwhites. This is the first one where I used only one color.

Almost afraid to show mine. This is probably the worlds ugliest scrap quilt ever created. I was living in a 5-wheel 75 miles from town in the middle of winter. I had no idea where this would go, but I persisted. I wish I would have used some sashing to break up the blocks. A friend of mine commented that some of the pieces glowed in the dark. I forgot that I had used some scraps from pajamas that I made for my grandsons. In it's defense, it has kept me warm for 11 years.
Can you say UGLY? |

No I love it. My idea of true scrappy. Just looking at it makes me sleepy and want to snuggle up in it.
I tied this together after the center panel was finnished by adding a fish border, fabric I had still laying around but it looks planned. With this one I put in a big variety of oranges, browns, blues, golds, greens

Every single scrappy quilt I have seen on this thread has been wonderful including your 'ugly' one which I happen to like very much.
Here are a couple of my scrappy quilts.

My 1st quilt was a scrappy K size. They are still my fav & mine are usually controlled scrappy, cause I tend to buy like colors. Here's my 1st string quilt,K size & a twin size made for my Mom. She loved flowers. The sofa throw is every color I had in stash.

Thanks, JOY |
That's how I sort fabric for scrappy quilts,by color. One reason I prefer making throw size is because scrappy quilts, with many seams are too heavy. Our bed is K size & it's just too much weight.I use a throw almost every day & enjoy remembering this n that fabric in them.Mine are backed in flannel & the only quilting is a lazy S down the joining seams.

============================================= I agree with you wholeheartedly! So I do it, well, not scientifically, but in my own way. I count how many squares I'm going to need, then grab all my black (or whatever color) and toss them in one pile. Then another pile with another color, so on till I've used all my solid or patterned scraps of each color. Then when starting it on muslin squares, I grab one from each pile and sew them together, with no careful matching as to what goes with what. Usually turns out looking more or less like a crazy quilt, and I quilt as much of it on the machine that I can easily, then sew all these together. Hand quilting the remainder isn't that difficult. I like doing lap quilts best, I can make so many more of those and be reasonably sure that they are used all the time. Usually turns out nice, and I know that by how strongly I'm asked for it by kids and grand kids of all ages. |
Very pretty! I love all the eye candy on this thread.....so many lovely scrap quilts.Makes me want to start strippin again.

I like it!...maybe us scrap quilters are an odd bunch? :) BTW,my 1st 8-10 quilts were made while we were full timing in our 5th wheel.Think I got more done there than I do in our house.
