scrappy baby quilt?
Any ideas for a baby blanket that would be scrappy. I have 4 1/2 inch squares, quit a few, and they have different colors and hues, along with different size images. They all look like they would make a baby quilt, but I don't have enough of one to do an entire quilt. Any suggestions? I do not have any strips, just squares. Not adverse to buying plain fabric, just need a pattern or idea.

disappearing 9 patch or 4 patch are always a good pattern

Here are a couple of scrappy ones I made. One is just 9-patch alternating with solid blocks and has sashing. The other alternates 9-patch with solid blocks that have small squares along 2 edges.

If you have a variety, why not just do a simple I Spy quilt? Sew the blocks together, a simple border, and machine stitch diagonally both ways or SID or echo quilt the seams. Babies LOVE quilts, and one that has lots of variety in blocks, colors, textural and pictures is perfect to teach baby. Quilt it very well, though, as baby quilts get washed a LOT!

MSQC Falling Charms pattern looks good with all different squares and 1 background fabric to tie it all together.

Bonnie Hunter has a free scrappy baby pattern called Story-Time Stars...uses different novelty prints for the center square-really cute. http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2012/...ime-stars.html

Here are some links to easy patterns www.allpeoplequilt.com has a two block kid's quilt pattern. http://munchkinquilts.blogspot.com/2...free-motioning shows an owl quilt with a quilting pattern. And www.quilterscache.com/T/ThatsMyBabyBlock.html Hope they help.

This is the free pattern: Warm Wishes found on the Quiltmaker website. Someone just posted her quilt on this site a few days ago. It was really cute. The pattern is simple and fast but with the right fabrics, it can be a show stopper. Good Luck !!

Here's one I made a few years ago for my great niece.
The 16 patches were made from 2" scrap squares. The pink X's were made from 3-1/2" squares that were snow-balled on two corners. |
katier825, you just gave me the perfect idea for some fabric I have. I have some charms, some fat quarters and some yardage and the first quilt in your post would work perfectly with all of that.

Sew a coordinating border around each block. That will stretch them out a lot and make it more interesting too.

Here's an I spy one I've just done! Starting with 4 1/2" squares and adding 2" strips log cabin style!

Thanks to everyone who responded - gave me a lot of great ideas and sites for patterns.

Love both, buy my favorite is the frogs. I have four great grandchildren and I am always looking for new ideas for quilts. You ladies inspire me. Thank you for sharing. Happy quilting.

Bonnie Hunter also has a pattern called Dancing 9 Patch that she made quilts for her nephews. I used her idea and made a Dancing 4 patch from scraps for a friend's baby. Turned out good even if I do say so myself. BTW you don't have to match seams in the Dancing 9 Patch.

Loved looking at all these patterns and made note of them for the next time I need a baby quilt or just want to do something small. Thanks, everyone!

Check out the Mysterytrain#6...your 4 1/2" squares would fit right in...it will measure just right for a babyquilt, cuz you can make it whatever size you wish. We're just finishing week 1, week 2 will post Friday.
