Scrappy binding
Hey everyone,
I'm one of those who doesn't like scraps. I just don't have the patience for them I guess. However, I've been making scrappy bindings and I really love the look! On the right quilt it's really pretty and fun. Does anyone else make scrappy bindings? I'm positive I didn't invent it. haha |
Yes, I've done a lot of them, usually (but not always) on scrappy quilts. When I have extra binding after making a quilt, it gets saved and used later for a scrappy binding.
I"ve done pieced and srappy bindings on a lot of jackets I've made. I was thinking the other day of using a pieced binding on a quilt that I'm finishing up now. I really like the interesting look of it.
I love a scrappy binding. I have a box of pieces left Over from non scrappy bindings and use them for the right quilt.

Scrappy bindings
I do scrappy bindings more often than not. As others have said, it uses up leftover binding from past quilts, and I love the look. I'd rather do this kind of finishing than making it all of one fabric.
I am another fan of scrappy bindings (and scrappy quilts). I just made a quilt that was all from one fabric collection and was worried about using a pieced binding, but it was perfect there as well. I do not (as yet) join my strips on an angle as I understand one "should" do - I just lay them end to end and so far it's worked really well. :-)
I do as others have said -- I make extra bias binding for each quilt and then piece it together to bind scrappy quilts.
Love scrappy bindings. Especially on my batik quilts.
I really like scrappy bindings. But I also love scrappy quilts! Guess that makes me a scrappy kind of girl. LOL

I look at bindings as the last place to add fabric to my project. I typically cut my bindings a bit wider than most, generally at 3" but I've gone up from there.
There are many ways of doing a scrappy binding -- even making it a design element. I just finished making one for my Bonnie Hunter project, these were cut quite wide because I might decide to use a 1/2" seam allowance with all those seams. In this technique I use long strips (these are jellyroll sized, 2.5). Off set them a bit while sewing and cut on the diagonal. The last shot shows a Christmas top ready for quilting. In that one I did the same technique but alternating just the red and green. edit/PS: (if in time) this is the sort of thing that happens when I either have too much time or fabric on my hands! |

Absolutely! I keep all of the scraps from bindings in a plastic bin and when I make a scrappy quilt, it gets a scrappy binding of similar colors even if not the same fabrics. Honestly, I toss out binding strips less than about 10", I do bias binding, but I sure do have plenty to use. Most of my segments are about 12 - 15 inches finished on my scrappy binding. Works for me and I am happy with the results. Note: I don't often do scrappy binding on baby quilts because the get more rugged use and washed more often. My thoughts are with all of the seams in a scrappy binding it could make the binding less "strong". That is just my theory no proof.

I made several scrappy bindings on the quilts I made for Project Linus. They helped add a bright cheerful note to the quilts.
Oh yes, for sure. When making scrappy quilts I try to find uses for every bit of scrap of decent size. Even add orphan blocks or cut-offs along the border or on the backside if I'm having to piece it. I feel the back should look as nice as the front side.

I do a lot of scrappy bindings, some in a wide variety of colors and some with just scraps of one color. I also sometimes find ugly stripped fabric on clearance scale and if it is the right colors, I snatch it up to make binding out of it. I love using stripes and plaids to make bindings. They add a bit of zing to a quilt.
I too love scrappy bindings. But then I do a lot of scrappy quilts. I just can't waste any fabrics. Scrappy bindings are especially great on string quilts. Have fun with your scrappy bindings. Your quilts will love you for this touch of color to the finishes.

I have been starting to use scrappy bindings on quilts. Began with my Entangled Sky quilt by Krista Moser using up the leftover fabric from the quilt and am planning on doing same on other quilts in the future. I have begun saving my leftover binding strips to use on other quilts when I can. Krista has a post on her blog page showing how she makes scrappy bindings https://www.kristamoser.com/post/no-...hind-binding-1.

Wow! That's beautiful, TDN!!!

I do love scrappy quilts, so maybe I should change my mind about scraps!! :D

Iceblossom - I really like the diagonally striped binding strips. It looks like more planning than I'm used to putting into my scrappy bindings, but I might have to give it a go one day. Also, that Christmas project looks so festive! I've just finished a project and am trying to narrow down my choices for the next one - Christmas might have just joined the mix!
One of the things I've noticed from browsing the boards here is how there are almost as many ways to design, make, place, and attach borders and bindings are there are to make quilts! ThreeDogNight - I would never have thought of grouping then overlapping the binding colours as you did, but for me, that took your quilt above and beyond. I love it! So much to learn here. :-) Thanks, everyone! |
I make scrappy quilts mostly for donation. I have made myself scrappy quilts and sometimes I have enough scraps left to use for bindings. I save scraps since they cost as much as fabrics used to make a quilt.
I use scrappy bindings a lot!!!
As for wear, as long as you use a small stitch connecting them I don't see it as a problem. So far not on mine.
I love scrappy binding on my civil war fabric big quilts and also on my small/wall/doll/mini quilts. I think it adds a lot of visual interest to the quilts.
I do the same as Dunster. I like the look!
I haven't done one yet, but I've been saving left over bindings from other projects, so I will have to try it out. :)
