Scrappy hexagons

I am almost finished with my GFG quilt and still love making hexies. I started with left over hexies and now have gallon zip lock bag full of scrappy 1.5 in hexagons made from my 1930's reproduction fabric collection.

I thought about making a scrappy quilt with them. Then I thought about making a 16 patch with white hexagons for sashing. I love 16 patch quilts and was wondering what if it would work???

Or what would be a good pattern to use for scrappy hexagons???

Jennie and Me 04-24-2014 05:27 PM

Ooooo, that sounds pretty. Show pictures if you do that.

auntpiggylpn 04-24-2014 05:48 PM

I'm working on a scrappy hexagon quilt and I have found that I too really love making the hexies but sewing them together not so much!!! I am intrigued by your idea of making a Hexie 16 patch! I can invision it in my head and I think it sounds like a very clever and fascinating idea!

HillCountryGal 04-24-2014 06:10 PM

I too am currently working on a hexie project.
English paper piecing isn't the fastest way to go, but it sure is relaxing. Plus you can carry the project with you anywhere. Will post a picture when/if I ever finish it.

Hexagons are addicting! I'm working on a scrappy GFG quilt also. It's not a project I get to work on often, as I do it when I'm sitting. Which I rarely do! Always working on other things. Actually took it to the tire shop in town when I had my winter tires changed out! Got to work on the hexies for a few hours!! I have 20 flowers done and this year 3 that I've been working on it! Using the 1" hexagon template pieces from www.paperpieces.com, which I really like. Not sure how I am going to put the quilt together, but I'm a long way from that decision. I purchased a digital edition book called "Quilts from Grandmother's Garden" by Jaynette Huff from the Martingale.com website. It has wonderful ideas for quilts.

Would love to see your end product. Like your 16 patch idea.

I love making hexies , especially with 1930's reprduction prints. Your scrappy hexagon quilt will look great! Since I have discovered silk thread I find I enjoy joining the hexies together more than I used to. Silk thread is so fine it kind of disappears into the fabric so it is invisible and the joins look much better than using regular thread - well, at least with my stitching they do. ha ha Also I find silk thread very easy to use as it doesn't tangle. Good luck with your quilt! :)

I love the idea of 1930's repo scrappy. I have a few things i need to finish up before i start but i plan on making a dresden quilt with 1930's fabrics and was thinking of using the scraps to make a GFG.

I would love to see your GFG when it's finished!

could someone explain the hexie 16 patch? I am doing a hexie all in homespun plaids in the diamond shape, it will be fr grandson's graduation in 2 yrs!

carolynjo 04-26-2014 02:59 AM

I'd like to see a picture or diagram of a 16-patch.

citruscountyquilter 04-26-2014 03:50 AM

I'm trying to wrap my head around a 16 patch hexi. I have seen 16 patch (like 4 4-patches put together) before but with a hexi you'd have to use half hexis on the edges wouldn't you to make it square?

I have been obsessed with this idea since the thread was started! Last night I started putting what I think will be a 16 patch or at least my take on it. I'm not sure how I will do the edges but will be in the green fabric to frame it

Carrie in PA 04-26-2014 04:48 AM

That layout is really cool. I love how every shape has endless possibilities.

117becca 04-26-2014 05:01 AM

AUNTPIGGYLPN!!!! That is beautiful!! The first thing i saw was how the green could form a ribbon flowing back and forth from side to side...

please don't forget to show us how this ends up!

I've started piecing hexies also -- just don't have a clue what I'm going to do with them yet. It is a fun portable project. I think that is one I will take to Denver with me this next week. I bet I can get a lot of them done at night in the hotel.

Watched a YouTube from sue Daley re EPP and she suggests using Bottom Line thread and Millener needle #11... On my to get list. Has anyone tried hexies....not real small using men's ties...I have a shopping bag filled with DDH's and would like to do something striking for daughters from them. Any suggestions?????

Geri B 04-26-2014 05:11 AM

On that 16patch..... Do the"sash" with another color....to bring out each "block" ....just a thought.

just janet 04-26-2014 05:47 AM

I making one out of scraps. It's years in the making. I made muslin hexie's as the "background" Problem is, it's a long term project and now the muslin's don't match and I'm very disappointed in it. I don't know whether to continue with it or "un-sew" the flowers from the muslin and start over. Right now it's a UFO just sitting on a shelf.

tropit 04-26-2014 05:58 AM

I have an old, GFG quilt top that I found in estate sale years ago. I think it really was done in the 30s, as all of the fabrics are from that era and the top looks old. Unfortunately, the maker wasn't very precise in her piecing and it is going to need some reworking to get it completed. I don't know if I want to touch her heartfelt work, or just leave it the way it is. I can't really use it for much the way it is right now. Does it take THAT long to do hexies? (In other words, is it as bad a small pieced yo-yo quilt?) I already have a lot of 30s feedsack fabrics to get me started.

BTW, I love the 16 patch hexi. To me, the green looks like leaves.

If you have not joined them yet can you inter mix them with the new muslin in each row? After all it is a scrappy quilt.

SherriB 04-26-2014 06:27 AM

I tried to do it in 16 patch and it did not work. I am thinking about doing it as a 14 patch instead. A row of 4, then a row of 3, then a row of 4, then a row of 3. If it doesn't look right, I will just convert it to a completely scrappy hexagon quilt.

Oh wow!!!! I love your idea!!! What size are your hexagons? Mine are 1.5 inches. What size diamond would I need? I am very challenged in math, especially geometry.

judykay 04-26-2014 06:41 AM

Can you post some pictures of the various layouts, you have me intrigued.

JanieH 04-26-2014 08:13 AM

Auntpiggylpn - I love your layout really inspiring! Thanks for showing it!

My hexies are 1" and so are my diamonds. I printed them off here. You can make them any size you want before you print them.

I just finished 3 hexi projects, pillow cases and sheet tops. I really enjoyed doing them, did it different from years ago, and it went Way quicker.
Once I had the individual hexies stitched over the form I pressed them, took the form out and pressed again.
I just kept them stacked neatly in a little box until I was ready to grab the next hexie.

The first time I did the never ending holiday table topper I kept the forms in until I'd stitched the one above it and working with all that cardstock made the stitching a real pain because you can't manipulate the fabric like we like to do.

I just finished making a GFG quilt and have several hexie's left. I love your version, but I'm perplexed as to how you figure out what size, diamonds to use. Is there a pattern I can copy from somewhere? I need a diamond to fit into the space for 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" hexie. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestion. Thanks!

SherriB 04-26-2014 12:45 PM

I printed off some 1.5 inch diamonds and they fit perfectly with my 1.5 inch hexagons. I can't wait to put some fabric on them and try out different layouts.

Go go to this website. http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/ your diamond will be the same size of the hexies you are using.

I did a very interesting Hexie class on Craftsy and also printed out the pieces from online.

mimiof4 04-26-2014 05:03 PM

I have made a scrappy hexagon quilt with 30's reproduction prints the same pattern as GFG with the flowers being all different (each hexie), and the background different shades of white and I think the different shades of white just add to the scrappiness of it. I hope this makes sense.

Me too! I love hexies and the 30s reproduction fabric and would love to see a gfg done using this fabric.

Have you seen this pattern with the 3d petals? I saw a quilt like this in a show this weekend and it is awesome!

Oh these are both cute, and quite different. Have you done any like this? Do you know if the ones that are gathered are hexes or some other shape?

I've just started making these fun little guys. It is so addicting. And easy. I thought it would be a lot more work than it is. It's just the time involved but that's the fun of it. I'm working on hexies on my down time and it feels like fun not work!
