I've been on summer break for almost 2 months now. I told myself I was going to try and do some more quilting this summer, but I just haven't been able to really find the motivation to start anything. I'm still fairly new to quilting, so I don't really know that I'm up for making a full size quilt just yet, could maybe try a simple one though. My main problem is I want it to look interesting, but still not be super difficult to make. I've been looking around at different patterns, but there's just so many I can't decide on just one. I kinda want to do some sort of scrappy quilt, seeing as I don't have much money to buy new fabrics. Does anyone have any suggestions for a scrappy type quilt (or not even necessarily a quilt, maybe a cute tote bag or something).

Why not try looking in your local thrift shops for garments that you can cut up to practice on. They cost very little money and its surprising the amount of fabric you can get out of a few garments . Ive been quilting only a couple of years, and so far it hasnt cost me a fortune in fabric!

Lap size quilts are soo universal, they are a perfect size for toddlers through adults. Crazy quilts are fun and you can use all kinds of fabrics, cottons, blends, clothing, whatever you can get your hands on. Just pre-wash everything and have fun mixing and matching fabrics, designs and colors. When it comes to quilting them, you can use plain of fancy stitches on the seam lines :wink:

How about the Disappearing 9 patch? You can use whatever scraps you have, it can be scrappy and you can arrange the blocks into any interesting design that you want.

If you aren't familiar with the D9P, I'm sure you can do a search here and find lots of postings about it as well as photos.

Bonnie Hunter loves to buy 100% cotton men's shirts or large skirts at thrift shops or yard sales to use in her scrap quilts.

I love scrappy quilts. Beside all the other good suggestions from others, how about a sampler quilt, that way you can try a couple of simple block patterns. Or a log cabin, easy to seperate fabrics into lights and darks and various layouts to change the look.

A good site for scrap quilt patterns is www.quiltville.com. Bonnie has lots of free patterns and she makes it all look so easy. I am using up my scraps by making her majestic stars pattern. Its real simple and fun.

I looked around on that site a little. It looks great! I looked at a few patterns, don't really have time to look at them all right now.. will have to do that later on. Thanks though!


Another idea I came up with is to kinda do a 'round-robin', just on my own. I made the first June BOM (paper pieced... random orbit I think it was called), and I'm thinking about using that as the center and just adding on around it.
