I have a pattern for a scrappy quilt and need 10 fabrics. When you pick fabrics for your scrappy quilts do you try to coordinate the colors /patterns or just pick the first one you see?

I just use whatever fabrics I have.
Once, I used only blue fabrics & it turned out pretty.

Thanks for this, because I have wondered this same thing..and, I am trying to quit being so "matchy-matchy"...

learning to just go for it and grab a fabric from the box

That's the main idea of a scrappy quilt .... using scraps .... just go for it!! :-)

I pay attention to nothing when doing a scrap quilt. Anything goes. Actually I love to throw the ugliest fabrics into my scrap quilts. I always love the results.

I love scrappy quilts and making them....however, I too, "choose" my fabrics....need to learn to go for it!

I do controlled scrappies and pick fabrics. More time consuming but more satisfying to me.

I use everything in the stash! My only "rule" is not to put like colors side by side.

owlvamp 09-15-2011 09:07 PM

Sounds cool. I usually put way to much thought in it. I'have to learn to just go for it.

I just made a scrappy quilt top, and like others have mentioned I just watched the tone. I separated fabrics into light or dark and then tried my best not to rearrange them. LOL Having one solid to border everything made me less worried about the different colors and patterns. Hope you have tons of fun.

I've done both controlled scrappy & whatever is in my scraps. Both work. I like darks beside lighters.Remember, it's your quilt, your choice.

orangeroom 09-16-2011 01:25 AM

Just grab whatever, however, you can still attempt to coordinate within each individual block. Good luck. Post pics when done!

I incorporate dark and light fabrics.

lynnsim 09-16-2011 02:37 AM

Is it 10 fabrics for the whole quilt? I would do a "conrolled" scrappy. If it's 10 fabrics per block, then I would just "grab" any thing.

I' m trying to get make ones that are closer to the beautiful ones in the quilt shows. I pick fabrics carefully.

This is where I have fun with color. I just keep trying fabrics from my scraps together until I am pleased with the combo. Playing with color and design is one of my favorite parts of quilting, the next favorite being watching it all unfold along the way. It is all such a wonder to see how my fabric choices work (or sometimes don't work) in the pattern I've chosen. Feels like play to me :o)

Scrappy quilts are fun; both random picking and organized picking work for me. It depends mainly on my mood and the pattern.
