To me scrappy quilts are almost "free" quilts. I make twins size square in a square scrappy quilts for all the girls and I only have to buy 4 yards of black sashing and the backing. I made string quilts for a couple of the boys and it only cost me for the backing.

I am very free spirited, scrappies are just that!

I like the way earthwalker said it, "chaotic visual interest".

Often times for me, scrap quilts are a very stream of consciousness way to work, a therapy in many ways, and learning to work with what you have.

Scrap quilts are my favorites because that's what my grandmothers made, using whatever they had left over from making clothing for their families.

To me it's sort of like buying furniture.. since so much is made from pressed sawdust anymore, I keep searching for the "real" furniture.

The "matchy" quilts just don't seem real to me. They are pretty, but just not the real thing that is made with love and caring. Well, that's just what I think...

I make them because I just hate to waste any fabric. I mostly use them to make string quilts, log cabins. etc. And yes, you get to break all the rules. Just fun I think :D

I was recently directed to Bonnie Hunter's site. She uses crumbs/scraps to make gorgeous quilts. Here is the link: http://quiltville.com/trunkshow.shtml

Who would ever think that scraps or crumbs could be use to make some beautiful quilts. You will be very surprised! Have fun looking at her list and posts of pictures!

My grandmother used to make utility quilts aka scrappy quilts, so when I see all the beautiful scrappies on here it makes me think of her and all the hours of playing under the hanging frame when I was a child while she hand stitched them with loving care.

My grandma made scrappy quilts cause that was what she could afford. I loved sitting in her lap or beside her and her pointing to the different fabrics and telling me "that was so and so's" dress or shirt or skirt. Those quilts just felt all warm and fuzzy to me. She remembered every fabric in those quilts!

I think it is a very personal thing just like having favorite colors.
