Scrappy
Plannin on my next quilt being a scrappy.
So I was interested to know, have you made a scrappy quilt? If so, what pattern did you use? Or recommend. I'm loving the Granny Square. |

You should check out the last 2 Mystery Trains #8 & 9. They are both scrappy. |
You can also get a cup (or 6) of coffee and look at the wonderful examples on the Scrap Quilt Show. There are over 250 pages. If you see something you like, send the poster a PM to get the pattern info:

My favorite is Boxed Squares. I have made it at least twelve times. Almost every one was scrappy. I have also made a French Braid. I LOVE a lot of color.

Love your scrappies, Boston. great choices of color.
|
I always get inspiration for making scrappy quilts by looking at all the photos that are posted daily on this board. Bonnie Hunter's website is a very popular place that many of the members of this board love to visit. Free patterns:

Boston, those are beautiful scrappies! I especially love your French braid. Colors are terrific .
Pamela, do you like to work with small squares or larger pieces? |
Crayon Box is my go to scrappy.
|
Most any pattern can be made into a scrape quilt..But it is a good time to use your imagination..I have made some by just adding pieces as u go..Since most of the time.People stay in the same color value when they buy..It usually works into a nice looking quilt..no cutting..or very little.
|
I was going to suggest what DD said the mystery train ride going on now is great. try that.
|
This is ALLLL I've made, scrappy quilts. Great way to use colors, create designs, and have fun! I've gone out to google and asked for scrap designs, and wallah, received so many to look at that it made my choices harder. have fun!
|
I don't know if I am the only one to do this, but a lot of my scrappy quilts I don't use a pattern. Many of them are donated to charitable causes and I just do whatever blocks, etc I like.

Beautiful!!!!

I'm working on a scrappy now that I'm enjoying making because it's easy and it's using up my strips of fabric. It's rail fences and pin wheels. Good luck with your chose - I know it's hard to pick one. Happy quilting.

When I began quilting, I wanted all my fabrics in the same colorway, matching, etc., etc. Then I had this "brilliant" idea of making a family reunion quilt with family colors. The first quilt had green, purple, black, blue, teal, red, and yellow fabrics At the previous reunion 2 years before, my brother and SIL suggested that each family (original siblings) pick a color and wear t-shirts that color so that my uncle from CA, who had never attended before could tell who belonged to whom. The tradition still goes on, so I received fabrics in those colors and being a little OCD, decided that each color block would represent the siblings and their children. I had 7 blocks of green, however, I used the album block pattern and somehow it all worked out beautifully, as I added one block for our parents. I did this for 2 reunion quilts, did I say I can be a little OCD, then picked red/white/blue, blue, red, black (a beautiful black and white log cabin), etc. and this year the quilt is purple and white. I have found that any block will do, some had special meaning, like "Farmer's Daughter", made in memory of my sister who had recently passed away, basket blocks, whatever, and I have overcome my matchy/matchy quilts and making these scrappy quilts took me outside my comfort zone, but I think it has made me a better quilter. I would check through quilt magazines, quilterscache.com, etc., pick a block and go for it, I think you will be more than happy with your quilt.

Scrappy is easy. Sew darker fabric scraps to lighter fabric scraps to make the block of your choice.
|
Onebyone...yes, that's the secret..just putting final border on a large quilt made of very small squares.
|
This website has lots if scrappy quilt patterns. http://www.weddingdressblue.wordpress.comgo to top of header and click on tutorials tab.

I love scrappies! I think 90% of my quilts are scrappies! I often don't use a pattern but take a common block and draft out my own. I do love D9Ps and Rail Fence, especially combining the two together.
|
I just finished a scrappy granny square quilt a couple weeks ago. I love it!! I used 2.5 inch left over squares from my 1930's reproduction collection. I followed a tutorial by Blue Elephant Stitches. http://blueelephantstitches.blogspot...-tutorial.html
I used a rose solid for my center square. I hope to hand quilt it. |
We have two plans for scrappy quilts. One is the Pineapple block, and the other is Granny Squares. The Pineapple will be completely scrappy. The Granny Square will be more of a memory quilt of all the quilts we've worked on. Each block will have fabrics from one specific quilt, we will keep it for ourselves. Log Cabin also makes a nice scrappy quilt; just divide into lights and darks.

Scrappy granny squares in green and blue

My Scrappy Granny Squares is a Work in Progress. It is a controlled Scrappy. I'm still experimenting to see how comfortable I am with it. Making a smaller block, with less blocks, felt too constrained, so I added that fourth row around. Each block measures at about 11 1/2 inches. I found one key to success making these Granny Squares: For the triangles that surround the small squares? Cut those triangles Extra Large, (by about a quarter inch) then trim your block to size before connecting them into rows.

Burgoyne Surrounded is one of my favorite patterns -- it's on my Bucket List. But until now, I've only seen it in two colors, so this is more of a possibility for me since I love scrap quilts!
I've been quilting over 30 years & I never heard of a granny square, but now I see what it is! When I heard granny square, I thought of crochet! Boston, your quilts are gorgeous! I've been wanting to make those quilts for quite a few years now. But now maybe the time is right ... |
