Where do crazy quilts fall into this? To me, a crazy quilt is the ultimate scrap quilt, but that might just be me.
What about like a jelly roll race quilt. Is that scrappy? Each piece is different... Does it depend on the jelly roll? I think I (more or less) lean towards thinking the same way you do about those two words, Bear. Although I think my style overall is "scrappy" (why use just one blue when it's so much more fun to use six?) so I probably don't use that word often, that's just a "normal" quilt for me. |
IrishRose- I love how you have that secondary design with the yellow- beautiful quilt!!!

Just recently I was telling my sister about a quilt I was about to make, telling her I wanted it somewhat scrappy. She had no idea what I was talking about and I had no idea I was telling her something that only a quilter would know about! :D
It was my Shakespeare in the Park- while it is scrappy, it's only red, green, and cream so it's "controlled" scrappy I guess |
I remember years ago telling my Dad about a scrap quilt I was working on. He understood scrap as junk and said "No quilts are scrap. They are all nice." Very kind of him, but he obviously didn't understand what I was saying!:)

for true scrappy check out early American quilts they are museum pieces and made with what people had even old clothes I have one where some of the small pieces were even pieced to fit in the block. It is absolutely beautiful and all hand done and I think of all the loving stitches that went into it wish I could show you but do not know how to post pictures here.

Truly an interesting question because it revolves about one's current frame of mind. I have a couple of drawers in my sewing cabinet full of the left over pieces of projects I have done and they are sorted into plastic bags by color-are uncut. When I get around to making a quilt(s) with them, it will be a controlled use of 'left overs' and have a scrappy look. Then, I also have a basket at the end of my cutting table into which I drop cutting table stuff. If I made a quilt from that, at random, it would truly be a scrap quilt. Like I said, it's the current point of view.

I also think the words are interchangeable. I am a scrappy quilter....if one fabric is good, I want 25 in the same colorway or contrasting. I buy fabric for my scrappy quilts and also use scraps from other projects.
