Try "Mile a minute" quilt blocks.

It's not fabric you will use again, mainly because there aren't any pieces big enough to do anything with them. What do you do with those scraps? I have little stacks from this quilt or that one and nothing to do with them. I don't have enough space to keep scraps AND my projects and stash.

Go to Bonnie Hunter's web site quiltville.com, she has many free pattern that use scraps of all sizes.

There are those who use every single tiny piece, including 1/2 inch pieces! I keep them and give them to her..she makes beautiful quilts with those tiny scraps others give to her.

Oh my, I can't imagine throwing away scraps. I love scrap, string, crumb, improve quilts; as well as quilted postcards and mug rugs. I save almost everything. If it is big enough to make the center of an applique flower it gets put in a b ox. Try to keep by color.

twinkie 10-08-2013 06:07 AM

Offer them to someone on the board in exchange for the postage. Some women would love to get them for their scrappies.

cherrio 10-08-2013 07:00 AM

I cut them into 2.5 in strips or squares of whatever size possible down to 2.5 inches. anything smaller goes into a large bag to be stuffed into pet beds for our local shelter. (animal) there is always a need for the animal beds and always a use for scrappy quilts!

I made some miniature quilts from scraps from my last project. The scraps that remained from those 2 quilts will just get used up in a junk blanket for the car using strip piecing methods.

For many years, I just cut up the scraps into pre-determined sizes: 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 plus 1.5, 2 and 2.5 inch strips. After I complete the current quilt, I will no longer cut squares smaller than 2.5, although I will probably continue to cut strips since various family members have requested junk blankets.

Here is a link to the style of junk quilt that I make. This one is actually pretty. Mine are ugly so people use them. The second quilt is quite pretty. For cars, you want ugly blankets because people DO steal quilts and you wouldn't want your window broken out.

Oh boy, I have a HUGE tote of Christmas fabric scraps(leftovers from crazy quilt stockings) and after reading your scraps post i went to my sewing room and made 7- 6x6 squares. The idea is to use them all up and make quilts for the 6 kids.UGH, I don't know when to quit. And boy am I a happy quilter!!!Thank you, my scraps are grateful and so is my husband, well he will be when he gets his new quilt on St. Nick night.

pojo 10-08-2013 08:33 AM

Hi sew them together to make a new fabric. Sew them onto muslin or paper too. Make scrappy blocks.

I suggest you check out Bonnie Hunter. She's the queen of scrap quilts, in my opinion. Check out her site and I'm sure you'll get some ideas and inspiration. Hummingbird Highway is another good source.

I don't throw ANY little bit of fabric away. When I 'straighten' the edges before cutting, or from trimming when squaring up........it all goes into a bag. Makes a great throw pillow filler (grandkids love them when they are laying around on the floor/carpet) and they are easily washable. Gonna make a dog bed for my grandkids' dog this Christmas cuz arthritis is slowing him down and I want him to lay on something comfortable (am glad he can't make it up onto their couch anymore tho'!!!). I have LOTS of triangles cut off from Flying Geese and other blocks and hopefully someday will get them sewn into some kind of design for a quilt. Been quilting a L-O-N-G time and haven't got a quilt put together for myself yet ho-hum. I keep giving away.

I find it very interesting to read what quilters do with their scraps. I use mine to make doll quilts for charity and enjoy either making new fabric from them or doinf strip or foundation piecing. It is fun to see what the results are, I don't pay attention to color or scale, just sew them randomly.

If they are too small for scrap quilts I will put them in a bag and save them to stuff a child's bean bag. They are also great for dog beds.

I donated lots of my small scraps to my middle school art teacher. She was thrilled. She also took some old buttons and jewelry I no longer care to craft.

MargeD 10-08-2013 02:01 PM

I have to say that the majority of the time I save them. However, since we now live in an apt. and space is limited, I've started going through the zip-lock bags of fabrics, sorting and only saving the pieces large enough that I might use for a scrappy quilt, but I can't save everything.

Don't feel guilty about throwing them away!! We can't save everything.

maviskw 10-08-2013 06:46 PM

When my pieces get really small, I make 1/8th inch seams. Anything too small for that is "lint", and goes in the wastebasket, which goes into dog beds, cat pillows and such. Our local cat shelter loves that. Use your trash fabric to make the pillow case and stuff it.

maviskw 10-08-2013 07:28 PM

triangles in the trash after cutting them off the edges of flying geese - but then fished them out,
I have done this. ! ! ! !

hevemi 10-08-2013 08:44 PM

I save anything 1" and over. I love paper piecing small log cabin blocks.4" blocks (sometimes 3") are my favorite. These are great for scraps, small enought to be quick to piece and multiply fast! I have piles ot these to dig into when I need to make a small gift,a purse, pot holder etc in a hurry.

earthwalker 10-08-2013 09:26 PM

So are you a "scrap convert" yet:) - or are you going to sell/give your "treasure" away:)?

Sewnoma 10-08-2013 10:47 PM

I cut things down to 4.5" squares and 6.5" strips as much as possible. Then out of what's left...any super narrow strips (half-inch or smaller) I stash to use as ribbon for gifts, twine for the garden, etc. Anything bigger or that's an odd shape I use in crazy quilts; I sew them down to 12.5 inch squares of thin muslin. I really love my crazy quilts; the random "anything goes" sewing is very therapeutic to me and the resulting quilt makes me happy because every little bit reminds me of the quilt (or quilts) it was originally used in. I often make them 2-sided (crazy on both sides!) and use batting scraps inside (that I've sewn or fused together).

jewellene 10-09-2013 12:30 PM

I too have lots of small scraps and they are all sizes, colors and shapes. I am in the process of making a quilt as you go project. I'm using a white back because of all the colors. The white will also be the sashing. My top(scraps) and batting is 7 1/2" and the backing is 9 1/2" which gives me one inch around block to sew blocks together and make the sashing. By the fabric being all different sizes, the abstract quilting is beautiful. Just an idea. I work on this as a second project.

misseva 10-10-2013 08:41 AM

I'm a Bonnie Hunter fan (her quilts are to die for) and have sorted my scraps by colors and have cut everything into 2.5, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 4-1/2 inch blocks & strips. I'm sewing the 2-1/2" blocks into 4 patches for now but can't decide on how to put them together. I'm sewing on a treadle machine that's 111 years old. So much fun. It's surprising how fast these little blocks go together. I've got 40 - 4 patches and I've only been working on them this week in my spare time. My mother always made scrappy quilts and I guess I inherited her genes.

wolph33 10-10-2013 08:48 AM

I use them for mug rugs, pot holders and placemats.I hoard scraps,lol-need to get rid of more of them.
