There has been some discussion recently about what kind of seam ripper is best. A recently article in one of the Quilt Magazines recommended one that has a fine thin point.
Another that I have found very useful is "Thread Pic" made by Clover. I have several. One at each machine and in every sewing box. |
I have several "Reversers" also. That's what I call them. I love CLover. Just sent one to DSB and hope she likes it too. YOu can never have enough though.

I like the ones with a thinner point too, they are especially handy with PP :D:D:D

I just purchased 3 clovers! My mistake was using a seam ripper to cut a chennele (sp) blanket. It works great but ruins it as a seam ripper.

i got one at the Walmarts that still carry fabrics, it is called prym creative, soft grip seam ripper, it is blue with pinkish purple grip area, works great, nice and sharp, fine thin blade.

I bought one of FOns and Porters Ergonmic holders you can add to your ripper. Keeps the hands from cramping. Now I need one for all of them so I don't have to keep moving it around. Sigh....more to spend.

I use suture removal scissors that I got from a medical supply store. They're like little scissors with a "hook" on one of the blades. It goes right under the stitch and snips it without catching the fabric.

I have many different seam rippers but I think I like the Fons and Porter the best.
Sometimes online at Joanne's you can get them 50% off, I order a couple, so I could give them to friends. |
The surgial scissors sounds like a good idea also.

I don't like the thick blade blue handle ones found at most stores. They aren't sharp enough to cut the thread, they break the thread. I like Clover for general all around good rippers. I use the surgical blades ones the most, they are great but hard to keep up with if they don't have a handle. Fons and Porter's is good too. I like the big handle on it, easy to find when I lay it down. As long as the ripper is thin and very sharp I like it. If I can't find anything to use my 40% coupon for at Hobby Lobby or Joann's I buy a seam ripper. I have many unopened ones put away when I need quick gifts for quilting friends.
