Seams for flannel

I am making a quilt that uses a lap size cuddle fabric piece on the front and the back will be pieced with 6 inch squares (6 1/2 “ unf) of flannel. I have not used flannel before so would appreciate some tips. Is a 1/4” seam enough since flannel is somewhat more loosely woven than cotton quilting fabric. What is a good stitch length? Any other helps would be great. I also plan to use a batting between.
Thank you.

I like to use 3/8 seam allowance for flannel.

i always prewash flannel ..some woven more loosely than others ..all shrink and all shrink at different rates. i use 1/2" seam allowance whether piecing blocks or for backing. i do this w minkie, faux fur & other novelty fabrics like the minkie thpe hancoks used to sell. i've used all of the above frequently for quilts & toys for my grands ..and everything has stood up well to too frequent laundering by their mother and childrens typical rough usage.

Roguequilter is right on the money!!!!! I always use 1/2" on the back of the seam allowance and, and, I make the binding just a little more larger so that it doesn't maybe want to make it smaller and comes apart. Hope that helps.

Rule #1 --- Prewash flannel! Almost all shrink a lot!
Rule #2 --- I would advise not piecing with small pieces because it can ravel.

When I use it, I make large blocks, 10"X10" or 12"X12" and back with a plain piece of flannel... no batting. They make soft and cuddly little blankies. I've made many dozens of them over the years for donations to Crisis Pregnancy Centers.

Thank you all for your answers. I saw the quilt I am planning to make in a quilt shop window. I really liked it. There was a page of instructions to make it. It called for 6” finished squares that is why I mentioned that size. I suppose I could make them bigger. What needle size is good to use and also what stitch length?
