Seams are thick
 

I have made a top for a doll quilt out of a variety of fabrics because children like to feel different textures. There is some flannel, plain cotton, minky, and a soft thinner courdoroy. I had planned to just use a an extra piece of flannel as batting but the seams are too thick. When I spray basted the layers together, I can feel them through the layers. So far, I've only made baby quilts and used flannel as batting so I know absolutely nothing about batting. Any recommendations? I do not want this to be too thick or heavy for this precious little 3 year old to play with it.

Did you press the seams open? That would distribute the bulk evenly.

I read somewhere a while back that when making miniature or doll size quilt to use a smaller seam allowance,like 1/8" inch....to lessen the bulk..pieces are smaller,and the fact that these will not get the same wear n tear as human size quilts.....never having done either...that sounded logical to me.

I think batting helps to "cushion" the bulk of thick seams....if you don't have batting maybe see if a 2 or 3 layers of flannel will help????

Seeing as its a doll quilt, does it really need batting? I tend to always press seams open (and I use a variety of fabrics) everything just works out better for me that way. I dont know what you have in mind regards quilting, but it could look lovely tied or with ribbon tacked on and tied in bows. If you tack them down before tying the little one can practice making bows.
