In search of......an answer!

I'm thinking of making a blooming 9 patch from my stash, but am wondering what the largest amount of fabric needed is for say a full or queen size quilt. I don't want to start cutting anything unless I know I'll have enough, can anybody help?

ghostrider 08-24-2013 06:17 AM

According to the pattern, a 72"x82" quilt (without borders), using 3¾" finished squares, requires 8 fabrics. The largest yardage required is 1.875 yards. Does that help?

Google free patterns and look at there amounts for fabric.

Ghostrider, thanks, yes that definitely helps! Dottymo, I started with Google, but couldn't find what I wanted! Thanks anyway though!

The Blooming 9 Patch quilt is in the book by Blanche Young, Tradition With a Twist. There are many beautiful quilt patterns there. The book is out of print, but available at an excellent price from at least one seller on eBay.

There is an app on the iTunes store that has helped me bunches. Unfortunately it only works with iPhone, iPad, and IPod touch. If possible, take a look and see what you think. I think it should be accessable for quilters everywhere!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/block...401791298?mt=8

Do take a look. It has colorways, patterns, fabric amounts. Everything.

Don't own an iPhone iPad or IPod touch but I have been a card carrying organ donor for 40 years or more.

Thanks ......just downloaded the app on my IPad........looks great!

Carol34446 08-26-2013 09:02 AM

To bad you have to have these gagdets to download it. but they are in the forseeable future not going to be here.

ghostrider 08-26-2013 09:33 AM

That app would be totally useless to the OP for answering her question about the Blooming 9-patch however, with or without the appropriate gadget. You need the pattern, not the block.

dogsgod 08-27-2013 11:52 AM

Ghostrider, actually I really appreciate the info about the app and I'm pretty sure I can piece the blooming 9-patch without the pattern and / or book, just wanted to make sure I started with a big enough chunk of fabric!

ghostrider 08-27-2013 03:35 PM

Have fun with it and we want to see pics when you're done!! :)

Dunster - I LOVE this book. My avatar is the Jamaica quilt from that book ( her colors in the book are not the best at all )......and I think every quilter/piecer who wants to try strip piecing should have this book. The patterns are truly "Traditions with a Twist"......

This book is not out of print at this time, however can be purchased for a good price other than the publisher. This is my favorite book of all times. Every pattern is perfect. I have made several Bloomin...All wonderful. I have taken several classes from Blanche. What a great person. She is now in a rest home in California after breaking her hip. Her daughter owns a great quilt store in our town. This is a must have book for everyone! Has been a long time seller for CT Publishing and still going strong. Blanche was honored a few years back in Houston for her innovative contribution to quilting with her method of strip piecing. Love especially my Jamaica. Love them all.
