If anyone is familiar with it. I seen it on the walls of the Essenhaus Inn, Middlebury Ind. It had rotating? squares in the centre, now I wish I had taken a picture of it, but did not. It was rather plain aside from the circle of squares in the centre and as I said they had the appearance of rotating. Is anyone familiar with this pattern and maybe a name? Thanks for any and all help.

Is this the block you are looking for? This one is a broken wheel.

judylg 06-27-2010 10:10 AM

No I do not think that is it, it was more six or more blocks that met at the centre on the ends and kind of overlapped each other to make a circle of sorts.

judylg 06-27-2010 10:12 AM

The block did not repeat itself it was one large block in the centre, it was a good size.

I bet that if you contacted them, and described the quilt to them they would be able to tell you something about it. At the very least, maybe they would snap a photo and email the photo to you. You could then post it here and maybe someone will recognize the block.

I went to their site....looks like a great place to visit. Maybe Craftybear is up for a trip

That is a good idea, not sure why I did not take a picture of that particular quilt, had my camera with me. Not thinking as usual. Will try that way, you never know it could work. Thanks.

I think maybe you're talking about card trick...I think that's the name.

No it was not card trick, unless it was a spin on card trick, the squares all were directed to the centre on the diagonal. I might call the quilt shop at Essenhaus tomorrow and ask them if they would know, it was different then the typical card trick.

I'm betting it's the Amish Star Spin pattern. http://www.amishcountrylanes.com/Pages/hs205.shtml

That particular quilt block is the "Crazy Eights" or at least the pattern that I have is called that.

hobo2000 06-27-2010 05:25 PM

Call them and ask them if someone with a cell phone could
take a picture and send it to your phone.

judylg 06-27-2010 05:57 PM

It is the Amish Star Spin, I am so, so happy to find out the name. It was done up very simply with the centre and borders. THANK YOU, so much for the name and photo. It makes sense to me now why it was around the Inn so much, it is called an Amish style Inn. Thanks you made my day!

CarrieAnne 06-27-2010 06:32 PM

Glad you found out!

judylg 06-27-2010 07:04 PM

I am happy to have found it, now I would like to find a pattern, now if I ever get it sewn, well that might be a different story. Thanks again.

I found some info on that pattern:

a free pattern:

looks interesting.

Judy, there has been lots and lots of discussion about the Star Spin pattern over the years here on the board. If you search "Star Spin Pattern" you'll find several long threads and many more short ones about it.

The original pattern is by Barbara Schaffeld. Her book is pages of tips and steps on how to construct the quilt. The book is called Hand Quilt Without a Frame and is now out of print. You can now find the pattern at http://stores.homestead.com/hstrial-...Categories.bok (the redesigned website of the quiltbooksusa site mentioned in most of the older threads on the subject)

I will search as you suggested. This is such a nice quilt, not sure I can quilt well enough to do it justice. I am going to get the pattern eventually and gather fabric, when?, well have a few UFO's to finish, it seems housework and yardwork can get in the way.

I have the pattern, I got it at Dutchland Quilt Patch in Lancaster PA but haven't made one yet. Here is the link to one place that sells the pattern.

Here is another site- the pattern is only $6. This is the pattern I have. You have to scroll halfway down the page.

I actually have a pattern for that. At least the center is the same. The corners are different from that picture, if I recall correctly. Not sure exactly where it is at the moment. I purchased it shortly after I started quilting, and decided that it was too advanced for me. Will have to dig it out and give it a try now.

judylg 06-29-2010 05:41 PM

I say, give it a try SOON and let us all know how it goes!

I've been there before I moved to FL. Fantastic place, great shops, the food is scrumptuous, and definitely worth the visit!!!
