Searching for new machine.
I started making quilts 2 years ago when I was expecting my first grandson. I currently have a Singer Confidence 7463 sewing machine. It has worked ok for the 4 baby quilts that I have made thus far. I am thinking about buying a quilting sewing machine and was wonder what everyone uses and what they would recommend. Are there any machines you would say stay away from. I have been trying to research online but just don't know which direction to go. I have been checking out the Singer Confidence Quilter 7469Q.
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. |
There are a whole lot of people that have and love the Janome 6600 or the Janome Horizon 7700. I've not heard a lot of good things about any new Singers. YMMV of course.

The first thing to do is find out how much you want to spend. Then make up a list of features you want on your machine. Some of mine were needle up/down button for appliqué, a good buttonhole stitch for fusible appliqué, a dependable accurate 1/4 foot(bring a fabric sample and to try), feed dogs that lower for FMQ, good warranty, good dealer support......I also wanted the Bernina stitch regulator for FMQ so I ended up spending about $3000 on a Bernina 440. LOVE it but there are many good quality machines out there at all different price ranges. Go with your list of "must haves" and check them out.

I have the Singer Quilter's Confidence, and I really like it. The price was right, under $300 at the time, and it does a good job. Lots of people don't care for the newer Singers, but some are VERY okay (at least for me). That being said, I also have a Bernina 1008, a Viking Platinum and a Janome 6600P, along with a house full of vintage machines. There is one caveat, though...I don't quilt on any of them because I have a Gammill longarm. But for piecing, they're fine!

Me personally, I love my babylock espire.I would consider it right up there in quality, very durable, not a class machine because it is big and heavy, but FMQ quilts really nice. you can probably get a good price on a used one. I would buy another babylock in a heartbeat, but I love my brothers as well and they have some nice ones

I piece and quilt on either my Juki TL98QE or my Babylock Jane, both straight stitch only, Juki has a table it fits into, Jane has an extension table. Oldest Daughter use a Brother 1500 for piecing and quilting, straight stitch only. All are good machines. Brother from all brands was 600.00, Juki 700.00 and Jane 850.00.
