I love what you do with your backings. I do quilt as you go, so this is a great idea for me, as I usually make an entire quilt top for the back, and it gets very confusing!

I love ur backing designs and the fabrics....They have given me a lot of inspiration...

now this is the back of a Christmas quilt I did. put two yards in the center and did a border around that. then did two color binding so green would match the back and red match the front border.

I design simple patterns or blocks from my leftover fabrics. Usually use these pieced areas on only 1/4 or 1/3 of the back, with the rest in two large uncut pieces. Here are a few pictures of my pieced backs. I almost always piece the back, because I like using up leftovers and I think it adds interest to the overall look of the quilt. I do try to use coordinating colors on the back with the front, even if they are not the exact same fabrics that I used on the front (but I do try to use at least a few of the front fabrics on the back to "tie" it together).

Thanks for taking the time to show us your amazing quilt backs. So many good ideas.

Citrus county, i use the safety pin method to line up the middles but you do have to be careful that the layers are straight. I am working on my first over-sized queen quilt and it is a bear. I did not have enough backing because of a newbie mistake in measuring, so had to add fabric after it was sandwiched. I used 505 spray so it was easy to peel back and attach. I am STILL short, so am going to add coordinating fabric to the top for turn down like lovespaper did, so I am excited that it will still look good. Live and learn. This is for our bed so I can live with a few oops!

Very nice, you have inspired me to try to use up some of my stash, so I won't have to go out and buy backing fabrics.

I also posted this link in the "Links and Resources" section. It is a creative way to center the layers when basting a quilt. ENJOY!!

I do all of the above suggestions. I also look at some of the modern quilts on Pinterest for inspiration. I just parts of them for my quilt backs. I am trying to use up some of my stash, it seems a shame to buy all of that fabric for a back when I have so much in my stash.

Mickey Depre, fabulous quilt artist and lecturer, calls these backs frankenbacks! And she uses extras and pieced backs in some of her quilts.
