Securing stitches
 

I love sewing on my Bernina 710! I would like to use the securing stitch function (knot icon) at the beginning of my stitching but my machine takes 3 stitches before stitching in place. Is there a way to stitch in place at the very beginning of the row? Thanks in advance.

This may be something that could be adjusted next time you take it in for service. Cant hurt to ask.

It probably does that to keep from making a hump to go over and cause the machine to make a mess in the feed dogs. I don't know actually, LOL

Are you talking about piecing or quilting. If you are piecing, there really isn't any need to secure stitches because the stitch gets locked when you sew your unit to the next piece. When joining rows of blocks your stitch gets locked in when attaching a border, or the binding in the case of non bordered quilts. If you are truly concerned about your units coming apart you can take a backstitch or simply reduce your stitch length for the first few stitches. Same goes for quilting. You can reduce your stitch length or you can knot and bury your stitches.

I have an older Bernina so I don't have that option. If no one has the answer, I would either contact your dealer or Bernina of America.

I have a 710 too. I know you can change it with the push of a button, but I can't remember which one. I know the manual covers it. Good luck.

How about pushing the button 2-3 stitches before the end?

You can set your zigzag width to 0 and decrease the stitch length there and then toggle between the straight stitch and the zigzag.

I have a Bernina B530 and it has that feature-so I had to go try it-right now. If I push the button before I start to stitch it takes the three stitches in place and then moves on in the normal stitch pattern. If I take a stitch or two and then push the button, it then takes the three stitches in place, and moves on. My preference is to take a stitch or two, secure the stitch and move on. By doing this you avoid the possibility of having the needle push fabric down and cause a bird's nest. Be sure your needle is not dull because that also will push fabric down into the machine and cause a mess. Since my machine stitches in place immediately when I push the button I can't comment on whether it is adjustable or not. My inclination is to say not but I really don't know.
