Seeking advice on fabric choices/patterns

1 Attachment(s)
Last weekend my daughter and I visited a fabric shop near her home. She chose the fabrics she likes, I added a couple more. As I usually pick the pattern and then the fabric, I'm unsure what pattern would make the best use of these fabrics. She wants the orange/mint/gray patterned fabric to be dominant. I have two directional prints in the palette, which I've tried to avoid in the past, so not sure if I should let that fact dictate my pattern choice or go with a more scrappy look. She likes blocks on point with sashing and cornerstones, but also likes a modern look.

Thank you all for your insights.

I would go for a modern style, with big blocks of the dominant fabrics and use the orange and gray as sashing. TO be honest, I'd delete the tiny dot fabric-- it doesn't really add anything to the others, and the color is off-- though that may be photo. If you feel the need to add another color, can you pick up what looks like a dark burgundy with gray tones in the print? Or add a grunge gray to go with the other grunge fabric.

Someone posted pictures of their black and white quilts done with strips pieced and cut into equalateral triangles. I think this might be a pattern to try with the Orange/mint/brown pattern, the solid Orange and the solid brown? It had a kind of 3D effect in rows and looked modern.

There is a pattern called It's Good to be Square that I just saw somewhere. I haven't made it, but it looks easy.

Here is one pattern that I believe would work well with your large scale geometric (directional) prints:http://www.redroosterquilts.com/shop...quilt-pattern/

I just finished a D9P but I set it on point. Nor sure it would work or not. I used soft pastel prints.

for a modern look, you could do zig-zags.

I agree. Even if it matches, it may not stand up well in that particular mix.

hugs,
Charlotte

Thank you all for responding. I agree about the tiny dot fabric. I think I need one or two more fabrics, so I'll be making a trip to my LQS (again!). Tartan, I am searching for the black and white quilt you mentioned. I found one, but apparently the pattern is no longer available. I'm such a weenie - never made anything without a pattern. Yngldy, I have the Good to be Square pattern. I made it in batiks and it turned out great, so that's a possibility. Thanks for all your suggestions.

The black and white quilt I was thinking of the pattern is no longer available but it looks simple enough to do without a pattern. It is the one titled Black and White Quilt and was posted by juliea9967. I used the advanced search under the title. It looks like it is made with 5 strips and then cut into the triangle but you could do 3 instead.

Great choice! Will really show the patterns.

I'm not sure you will get the effect you are trying for if you set these directional fabrics on point. Your fabrics are going to point back to straight, unless you cut them on the bias. I'd cut large square holes in plain paper, and set them "on point" (Audition them)

I didn't even see the dot print, I thought it was counter. If you squint, you can't really see the dots. Do the distance test with the dots, step back 10 feet, then 25 feet, or use a digital or cell camera. The dot may come off as a blender. Only use it if the color is exactly what you need tho.

...just my input, since you asked. :) I think I sometimes come off bossy, without thinking it in my head...

Take 5...you can use the print she likes best for all of the large squares....or use all of the fabrics... agreed...the smalldots should be replaced....if you can find something else you like...it could be used for the inner border....

I made a quilt with these colors = or - and a 'chevron' was requested.. never did a chevron before, but it came out great! I did have some fabrics with prints also. As I shopped around in stores, I saw 'chevron' everywhere!! Curtains, dinnerware, everywhere! Also I thought the color combo was '???' but it looked great ! If you'd like to see it, search 'quick baby quilt & scrap changing pad. The pic should come up! Let us see what you came up with!

Having looked at the pattern it would make up beautiful with the fabrics she likes. Maybe add one more large print but your directional fabrics would look really neat. You might take the time to look at some of the free patterns the fabric manufactures have posted on there sites for more ideas.

If you know the brand and name of the design you may be able to look it up online and see if designer made up a quilt with it. Also check out large print quilt patterns, modern patterns.

There is a really nice modern pattern called Movement In Squares that is free online. I forget where and am on my Kindle, so I don't have my "favorites" list, but it should come up if you Google it.

earthwalker 04-03-2015 03:42 AM

Probably a bit 'out there' but could you replace the dot fabric with a large vibrant/floral/modern print. Probably not expressing myself very well, but some deeper orange/green/shades with a less rigid pattern would give it a bit of oomph. Definitely needs a contemporary pattern, and maybe a dark chocolate in a border/binding.

Happy New Year one and all! It's been awhile, but I've finished this project. I presented it to my daughter for Christmas and she likes it. I'm just glad to get it off my table!

Maple Island Quilts has some that are fun, easy and modern. The big pieces of the BQ patterns would show off the focus print and you only need 2 or 3 other fabrics. http://wp.mapleislandquilts.com/miq-patterns/bq-nation/

quiltingshorttimer 01-01-2017 05:25 PM

great quilt--you really "nailed it" with the design for a very modern quilt.

earthwalker 01-01-2017 11:06 PM

Beautiful quilt.

Jordan 01-02-2017 07:36 AM

Amazing and beautiful! You did a wonderful job with the fabrics your daughter wanted. I think all of the fabrics are compatible and it sure turned out great. Lucky daughter.

Jeanne S 01-02-2017 08:09 AM

The Five Easy Pieces quilt pattern in the Tutorial section of this board would be great for these fabrics.

RedGarnet222 01-02-2017 10:12 AM

Try the BQ quilt patterns by Maple Island. I am thinking a BQ2 would be great for this type of fabric.

JenniePenny 01-02-2017 01:17 PM

It came out great! Very nice job and thanks for coming back with the finished quilt!

ube quilting 01-02-2017 02:22 PM

pale robin's egg blue would be beautiful with the oranges. See the little bit of it in the large modern print!
lovely fabrics.
peace
