I don't cut anything on the mat until I removed all other fabric off the mat. Learned that the hard way when I was "just going to trim that one last seam" and ended up cutting a corner off a top that "snuck" under my piece. Of course it was something I had NO MORE fabric to fix. Other than that, I will rip a seam (and even recut pieces) twice. If at the third attempt, the piece still won't be perfect, it stays the way it obviously wants to be. Like someone said: Done is better than perfect in that case.

I pick all threads off project and my clothes and make sure it goes into wastebasket. Sewing room floor is carpeted and I HATE vacuuming. I have an old upright Hoover and it doesn't do a very good job anymore.

This is a lesson I learned the hard way -- I measure and trim each piece of each block, as well as each completed block, to size. It has really improved the precision of my quilting (though it is still far, far from precise.)

I am obsessive about pressing and measuring. Saves grief down the track. Need to be more organised but my home office is also my quilting space.

Love this!

When I'm done with my iron I let it cool on an iron trivet unplugged and where I can see that it's unplugged. When I used to iron in the kitchen it was a habit to unplug the iron and let it cool on a stove grate at the back where no one cold knock it off. [QUOTE=zozee;7791630]I'm only rule

I find I also need to do this. I find for me it makes them all easier to see & they don't get lost in the crowd!

There is always the "next" quilt waiting to be quilted - it's only one and it is ready to go as the current one comes off the frame. I hand quilt, so it is often months waiting for one to be finished. There is some overlap, but not too much.

I would love to have rules, but then wouldn't stick to them anyway, so why bother!
