I can't take a class nor do I have anyone helping me. I was wondering for those of you who have used a book to teach yourself some quilting technique etc, which book or DVD did you use? If there are any video online, I'd love to see them as well.
Thank you |
When I started I bought "quilting for dummies". It was OK and got me started. Some of my best advice has been here. It's not always a question I asked, but an answer to someone else's question.

i prefer book and dvds. i also have some dvds of workshops that quilt artists have released.
if you're just starting out the library typically has some good beginner books that you could borrow. if you go to the cotton club website or the equilter website you'll find many dvds on different quilting subjects. you could check out what they have and then search the internet for the best price. |
I started out with books from the library. If your library doesn't have much you can request them to purchase quilting books and DVDs (probably need to be specific with your requests), or ask about inter-library loan.
http://www.smartflix.com rents DVDs on many subjects, including quilting. I haven't seen their DVDs, and the rentals are a little on the pricey side IMO; however, it would be a lot less expensive than purchasing a lot of DVDs. Eleanor Burns "Quilt in a Day" books and DVDs are popular with beginning quilters. You might be able to find some of them on eBay or Amazon used. |
i just remembered quilt university has online workshops that cover many topics for all levels and i think the prices are reasonable.

I like the Quilts! Quilts! Quilts!!! The Complete Guide to Quiltmaking By Diana McClun and Laura Nownes

Free videos are at:
http://www.quilterstv.com I found Eleanor Burns to be the best for books and dvd and video. She has her basic videos at her web site. http://quiltinaday.com |
You can google quilting videos and find many out there that are free. Your local library may also have quilting videos, our library system has many videos and books, I go online to reserve/request the ones of interest or that I have seen advertised elsewhere.

Thank you for the suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming!!! :)
Yes, I do use the library and WorldCat for interlibrary loans. Problem with vido is that I can only get loans in my own state and buying them is not an option. I'm on a shoestring budget right now if I'm to get a sewing machine so I can quilt. :) |
Believe it or not, You Tube shows different techniques if you are looking for something in particular. Found out about it on the Connecting Threads Website--who knew??

Gosh, I love this forum! I learn something new EVERY DAY!!!

Carol Doak - "Your First Quilt Book"
Alex Anderson - "Start Quilting with Alex Anderson" - leaflet Nancy Zieman - "Quilt with Confidence" Better Homes and Gardens - "Complete Guide to Quilting" These I feel are wonderful step-by-step books on quilting. You could also try youtube and search for patchwork, and there are many quilt sites that offer information. |

Recently, I have seen some fabulous clips on You-Tube on just about ANYTHING quilting and don't forget the guides in the Tutorial section of this forum. |
Sharon Schamber's web site has many tutorials. If they're too advanced for you now, bookmark them, or save in favorites to look at when you're a more 'seasoned' quilter. She's a terrific teacher. Whoops - I should have said her site is on YouTube

Moose, I just discovered the quilting videos on utube, some are of Sharon Schamber, and plus lots of others. Just go there and search for quilting. :-)
