I am selling a quilt that I pieced but it was quilted by a quilter with a long arm who does this as a business. Of course, I paid her for her work.

My question is this: Is it customary to give the quilter part of the sales price? I have never sold a quilt before and have no idea if there is a protocol to this. Thanks.

I would think not, but let's see what the others say...

The quilt is yours to sell and reap all the profits. You paid the quilter for her services, that is all that is due her.

If you paid the quilter for her work, then no, the sales price is yours. If you did not pay her, then I would say you probably should share with her. My mom and I share doing pieces and if we sell one, we share the $$.

Thanks for your replies.

How nice of you to ask! You don't need to pay her since she was already paid for her work, but it would be thoughtful to tell the buyer who the longarmer was.

I know some people put their name and the name of the longarmer on the label, you could do that if you wanted to recognize her work!

That's a nice idea. Thanks.

I thought on a bigger scale - You wouldn't give your plumber part of the proceeds if you sold your house. He was paid for the work he did, and that concludes your business with him. Congratulations on selling your work of art!

When I use a longarmer, I always add her name to the label. I would never try to take credit for anothers work, and of course I pay her for her services. After that, it belongs to me.

No I don't think you have to share part of the sales price. I do think you should consider giving her credit for her work on the quilt label.

If she has been paid, this is completely yours to sell.

I agree with the others, no need to give the LA more than what you've already paid her. Giving her recognition on the label would be really nice.

I agree

You already paid the quilter so now all the profits are yours. Enjoy.

I think by putting the LA name on the label is very fair. It is your quilt, you did all the work from beginning to end.

penski 03-16-2010 05:23 PM

my vote is no it is yours to sell and your profit to keep

zz-pd 03-16-2010 06:38 PM

The money you make for your quilt is yours, you already pad your quilter for her work. Penny

If you already paid the quilter to work on "your" quilt then it's your quilt to do as you please. Good luck.
