Yes, make them the quilt. That is a kind and considerate thing for you to do.

There are several patterns that have been posted on this board in the Tutorials section. You might go through some of those to find one you think you could handle.

The Disappearing 9 Patch is one, also a Disappearing 4 Patch...both very easy but come out great.

I am so sorry for your family's loss. The log cabin was my very first quilt and I was self taught. Eleanor Burn's Log Cabin book is an excellent resource, check your library. I think it will be a very compassionate and loving tribute to your son's girlfriend's family. I'm sure it will be cherished.

Great idea on the quilt - work with your son on personalizing it. Find a fabric that has her favorite flower, maybe a picture of a pet, school colors, etc.

As far as a pattern - I would suggest the D9P. You can strip piece it together and it is a really great and interesting quilt.

Good thoughts to your DS. This must be a really hard time for him too. Maybe helping you with the quilt will help him with his grief process too. Maybe you can put a couple of pictures of the two of them together on the quilt. Just an idea.

First, I'm so terribly sorry you lost your friend.....and I think this would be a wonderful quilt to make in her memory to give to her parents....I think they would find much comfort in the quilt......It's a log cabin design and it's not hard at all....If you have any problems, as you know, the folks on this board are ever so helpful and knowledgeable, so don't hesitate to ask for guidance.....Here's wishing you the best...Hugzzz......

I agree, I would make the quilt and give it to her parents. Just explain that you'd made it for her and wanted them to have it. I think they will be touched...I would be.

I think that you could definitely do this pattern, even as a beginner...but to be truthful, I (as a beginner myself) wouldn't attempt it in a time crunch. If you plan to give it after Christmas (which I also think is a good idea, to let them get through the holidays) and can take your time with it, then go for it, for sure.

Thank you all for the encouragement and guidance. It will take me a while to make the quilt. I have to buy the pattern as our library doesn't have the book. I also have to find the fabrics to make it. I don't think I'll have it ready before Christmas.
