I would like to hear from anyone who has made a quilt using a serger and what your experience was, what advice you have to give .

My Pfaff serger does not like batting; begins to cut irregular. This was a quilt as you go quilt. Regular sewing machine is more fun and accurate. Could always try a small project first.
|
Muffie44, I hadn't even thought of a QAYG. I had only been considering piecing on the serger. Did you have a book on the subject or did you just try it?
|
Hmmm. Will watch this topic!

I made the flannel rail fence top for the quilt that is on my bed with the serger. I didn't have any problems.
|
Really glad to hear that. Was it faster than the regular sewing machine?

I've seen a log cabin done on a serger--no loose threads. Have not done one myself.

Here is a tutorial from Nancy. Serge & Merge-A Speedy Serger Quilt . I don't know why it didn't come out as a link. It's on you tube. It's a pretty good looking quilt.

Thanks for the link, TanyaL and Sadiemae! It was fun to watch and see what can be done on a serger.
I've been thinking about doing something in a poly satin since I've got a bunch of that lying around after some dress making. The material would look great in a quilt, and it would definitely need serged seams to stay together since the material is very loosely woven compared to cotton. Could a serger be used for FMQ of some form on such a quilt? That's my biggest concern since I don't know how I would quilt such a slippery material. |
