I'm new at long arm quilting. I know the machine (Gammill) should be able to use any thread. I have some serger thread that matches my current project. Think I'm okay to use the serger thread or should I wait until I can order quality long arm thread to match.

It may be too thin to do a good job....serger thread is usually 2 ply where regular sewing thread is 3...

i've used lots of serger threads for quilting- if the thread does not break easily and you can get your tension right you can use it
i've also used silk thread that is alot finer than serger thread- with wonderful results.
as long as the machine will accept the thread- and it does not break constantly you can use it- people long-arm with metallics, invisible thread, silk thread, wool thread, all kinds of threads....no way to know if it will work for YOU until you try it- personally- i never use (regular sewing thread) for long arm quilting. i save that for piecing

If you have a gammill.... do yourself a favor and get Superior Threads... my friend has this machine, and says it's a dream and she never has any issues with it....I have a high speed Janome on my Pinnacle frame,,, have used the serger thread,,, and it would work, but more problems than it was worth,,,, i bought some Superior and NO problems whatsoever, and no tension fiddling....

I just finished a quilt with serger thread, and it came out good. No eyelashes or anything.

You never know until you try. I've learned that every machine has its own personality even though they may be the same exact machine. My machine hates poly batting, but a friend has the same machine that loves it. So load up a test quilt and see what happens! I've used serger thread on a domestic machine for quilting, but never in my longarm. Might give it a try also.

I've used it in my Innova for practice pieces and haven't had any problems. Give it a try and you might like it.

I have a gambill long arm and I buy quilting thread from www.longcreekmills.com and it's $3 for 6000 yards, not many colors to choose from.

I have a HandiQuilter 16 and use Maxilock thread all the time. I use a size 16 needle and use Maxi in both needle and bobbin. The only issue I have ever had with Maxi is dark navy and black threads. Tried 2 spools and could not keep it from constant breaking. But had that same problem when using it in my domestic machine as well.

I like Maxi because it is thinner and you get a lot less thread build up if you have to backtrack.
