I have a cone of serger thread that is the perfect color for an upcoming quilt. I have searched for this color in all regular spools of thread to no avail.
If I was to use serger thread on my regular machine, both upper and bobbin, would it harm, jam or "lint" up a machine that is not a serger :?:

I would like to know the answer to this question. For some unknown reason I bought serger thread at Joanns - possibly because it was on sale. I do not have a serger.

I have used serger thread, Joann's brand and Maxi-lock and have had no issues with it all. I have been using the thread for piecing going 4 years with the large cones and find them comparable to the Connecting Threads cotton that I have bought. I made a 3ft square small quilt using all of the above threads and washed it every week, sometimes twice a week for 6 months. No thread breakage or shredding at all. It has been a great money saver to be able to use the cones.

I use it all the time. It is a bit more linty but I clean my machine out pretty regular . I have done the "break" test and it is surpisingly stong thread.
For the value its worth the little bit of time for cleaning the lint.
Just make sure to use a cone holder or a coffee cup for the thread. It really will have issues ( breakage) if you try to use the spindle on your machine.

I thought that there are different types of serger cones - thread thickness, cotton, polyster etc

Does it matter what sewing machine you have vs what type of thread is better?

Does the size of needle you are using in your machine depend on the thread you are using?

I use all cone thread for my machines. I find it does not hurt the machine at all. It is also cheaper to buy the larger cones. More money for fabric.

Someone sent me a gift of some and I have no problem with it at all!

I have Janome machines and they have not been picky about thread. I use a 14 needle most of the time and have had no issues at all. When I look at what a 250 yard spool costs, $4 and then the yardage on a cone is 3,000, that is 12 spools of thread. I will gladly by the 99¢-$2.99 cost for a cone of thread compared to $48 for 12 spools.

I use it all the time in my new machine with no problems at all.
