Servicing/cleaning machine?
 

The owners manual for my Janome has no info about oiling or cleaning it. I know it isn't supposed to need oiling. I take the bobbin area apart and clean after every quilt. Should I be taking it in to be serviced somehow?

Many newer machines are sealed and don't require oiling by the owners, however, you should periodically take it in for maintenance. The technician will oil it.

The self lubricating machine have embedded silicone that will keep the parts lubricated. The problem with those are the machines left sitting for a long period of time and not being used then when started up the parts are dry, it's like starting a car with no oil. Don't put these machines in storage for an extended time. My problem is finding a repairman that knows what he is doing and not just dousing oil all inside.

I had an old Elna SU62 back in 1978 till 2000 and I never took it in for servicing ever. Heck I can't remember if I ever oiled it and I'm sure the poor thing was supposed to be oiled but she was such a trooper, never complained. Wish I never sold her now.

As for the newer machines, yes they have sealed areas so no oiling by us. Had my machines in storage for 4 years so when I got settled I took them both in for servicing. Its been a couple years now since then and I just cleaned out the bobbin area real good after every bobbin change. Got my super duper mini vac attachments out the other day and really gave them all a good cleaning. Have 2 sergers that have never been in for servicing. They get so dirty with all that fabric and thread flying about so cleaned as good as I could. Just found out my Babylock Evolve has a little hatch at the bottom you can remove to get inside deeper, Never noticed that before. Maybe I should pay closer attention to my babies than I do.

I have an older Bernina 1530 and hopefully, I will be getting her into service later this month.

My Singer 9022 has a weird little grinding noise. I can't tell if it's in the bottom or near the knob you turn to choose stitch pattern.

I have been inside it everywhere cleaning and oiling several times now and I'm stumped.

It's not continuous, only every now and then but it's very disconcerting and makes me fear that one of the plastic gears might be failing.

It still sews well though.
