Setting Blocks on point
 

I am stuck with something. I'm setting squares on point around a central large square and I'm stuck on how to do it. The center block is 33x33". I know I need side setting triangles, I"m just not sure how to lay it out so I can put it together. I haven't looked at YouTube - that's next - but I figured if any of you could point me in the direction of instructions I'd appreciate it. The one I found on Pinterest assumes a full quilt set on point. I may end up taking over the dining room table or floor tomorrow to lay it out entirely so I can get the strips set up, but if I can avoid that, I'd like to. Thank you for your help. Nothing like designing a challenging quilt for my return to quilting after 4 years away. :p:shock:

Ok, so the rough estimate of a diagonal of a square is 1.5 the side... but I use a calculator for this. The typical quilting triangle is a Right angle. That is there are two sides that are the same dimension, one 90 degree angle and two 45 degree angles. Since you have the diagonal, that's the hypotenuse (33) and you know the angles, so I used option 4 on the link.

This site works if you know any of the various parts, it says the it's roughly 24" (23.33) for the other two sides, add 1" to cut with (the exact math is 7/8"), so (2) 25" squares will make your 4 setting triangles, plus a tiny bit to trim down.

This is is what I’m working with. I want to put the diagonals all around the quilt, using the large block as the center of what I hope will be close to queen sized.

It will depend on how wide you want the border with the squares to be. If your sides are 33", you can make 11 x 3-1/2" square-in-a-square blocks for each side and 4 corner blocks, or cut background squares 4-1/2" once diagonally then join to 2-1/2" squares, and trim any extra when finished the border.

Sadly after a couple of computer crashes and hardware breaks I've lost most of my bookmarks. I do know there is a quilting site that has all of this figured out. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with that link. Good luck. Math is definitely not my strong suit, lol.
