Can anyone talk me through setting a quilt square on point. I have a pattern that I want to make but I would like to set it on point so the block actually ends up being straight. I am including a picture to hopefully make more sense.
Thanks for any help. |
Don't know if I understand the question but for a straight edge you'll need triangles to finish the edge straight. Think "diagonal" (45 degree angle) when putting the rows together.

Love your block. Can't answer your question. Where did you get those dots & whose fabric is it?

See if this helps you

I bought the Fons & Porter Omnigrid "Easy Diagonal Sets Ruler" - this tells you what size triangle to cut for your block size.
Very pretty block, will look lovely on point! |
No answer but LOVE!!! :-) :-) :-) the bkack and whites and the blocks
What is it? |
measure one side of your block you want to put on point- times that measurement by 1.41; cut a square that size- cut in half diagonally in both directions- each triangle attaches to each side of your block

don't know why but today everytime i write a post it shows up twice- so i'm going back=editing and updating- i wish there was a delete button along with the edit button. oh well-

What you need is a Jody Barrows Square in a Square ruler. It allows you to sew a straight piece of fabric on each side of your block. You then use the rules to cut off the excess at the right angle. It saves making triangles that stretch and is the easiest way I have found to do it. The quilt currently on my bed was made with that ruler. Check with your local QS they may offer a class if they sell the ruler. There may be a web site. Our local guild had a woman who teaches it demo it for us. It has been around since 1995.

Cutting Quarter-Square Triangles
Cut a square with sides that are 1-1/4" longer than the finished length of the triangle's longest edge. Use your rotary equipment to cut the square in half twice diagonally. |
