Setting squares
 

I am working on a table runner and I need to set a square into a 90 degree angle. There are many of these to do and I need a system, other than try it, undo it, try it again and then undo it again. If anyone has any tips that will help me, I would certainly appreciate them. Thanks so much.

I have sewn the dark lavender to the lighter lavender floral so I have a shape similar to a wing. I now have to sew the white square into that shape and that is where I am really have trouble.

I would sew it in just like putting the top on a baby blocks you don't have to worry about the angle sew the white square to one side being sure to keep your fabric straight stop with needle down in center of your seam between lavenders ... turn and sew down the other side if you left quarter inch at your seam it will turn easy if not no problem just go ahead and stitch it them maybe have to remove a couple stitches in your lav pieces you will know when you iron it but you can sew either way

above is for the white square in corner if you mean the flower in the middle it is just sewen straight to the side of your diamond shape. Look at your piece straight on and make straight seams don't worry about setting anything at an angle I think the picture shown at an angle may be confusing you...

If you have a lot of them, is it possible you might be better off doing diagonal lines? If you look at my example, both squares and triangles have the same measure on the diagonal. If your mat has a diagonal line, measure the regular width you want, then measure the diagonal for that width, and don't bother with any math at all.

Of course, if your calculator does square roots (advanced calculator on Windows) A squared + B squared (finished sizes of sides) = C squared (the diagonal), then find the square root and add seam allowances.
Even though I am a former math teacher, I just use my mat and ruler. It's faster.

looks to me like you are really asking about set-in seams, not setting squares. Big difference.

Thank you so much, fellow quilters. After looking at your links and rethinking what it was I had to do, I got it and it really is quite simple. I really appreciate all of your help.

Y seams are what you will be doing. not to hard. just stop at 1/4 seam and flip and do the other side/seam.
