Setting triangles -- Help needed
 

I'm getting ready to sew setting triangles onto my blocks. First time doing this. Do I sew opposite sides on first, (North and South ) then the other two sides, (East and West) or does it matter? I could sew them in N, E, S, then W. Does one way look better or is one way easier to sew? The pattern just says to sew them on. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't think it matters, once the quilt is finished you won't be able to tell. Personally I'd probably sew opposites (north & south) on first, because if you went north then east, you'd have to press north before you could add east.

If you use setting triangles, your blocks are normally set on point, so you sew your blocks together in diagonal strips, so it would be either NW to SE or NE to SW ;-)

I do mine just like quiltbug link shows. upper left corner and rows on after that.

As you combine the rows, your setting triangles wll need to be attached, as in the picture, or else you'll end up doing y-seams to set them in. One thing that helps me is to rotate the diagram so that one corner is at the bottom center, and the rows run straight across, horizontally. It's easy to see how the triangles go on that way if you're not very spatial.

I wonder if we're talking about 2 different things here.

The OP was talking about sewing triangles onto blocks. She called them "setting triangles", which is the terminology usually used for the triangles used at the ends of rows of blocks set on point:

Ah, OK. Then that way.

The blocks are set on point, and each block has a triangle sewn on each side to make a larger square block. The quilt is paper pieced, with 18 inch long borders being sewn on the end of each horizontal row. If sewn together on a diagonal, the borders would have to be sewn together before being added. This is hard to understand without a picture, which I don't know how to post. You can see the pattern and maybe understand better. Pattern is V235, Carolina Lily, at "averyspecialcollection.com". It's really a beautiful quilt. All pieces are done, ready to put together. Maybe I'll learn how to post a picture by the time I finish it. Thanks for all the replies. I learn so much here.
