this is what my dh calls setting up my sewing area. i have been lucky? enough to inherit sewing supplies, machine, etc and want to set it up so I am not all over the house as I tend to do with my other crafty projects. I know I need a cutting area, ironing area, sewing area of course and storage for my supplies(fabrics, scissors, rulers, etc) any suggestions before I drive my self crazy trying to set this up and not liking it??

I find that it is trial and error. Just set it up and try the layout. You may need to adjust areas for better useage and flow. Enjoy!

When I 'set up' my sewing area, I used a graph paper so I could move things around on the paper & see how much space I had for each piece of furniture etc. I had to find space for a long arm quilting machine (which had to be turned diagonally) to make it fit. Doing this really helped me. I found a tall narrow chest of drawers that didn't take up much floor space, but holds lot of things.

When your done you'll just love it ------- so enjoy the ride!

It helps to have a "tri-angle" work area between your cutting space, sewing space and your pressing station.

How fun to set up your new supplies. I agree your probably going to have to set it up and readjust as you start to work. I'm left handed so my cutting space is to the left of my machine as well as small iron, with my thread,bobbins scissors to the right. Find a good flow for you and have fun.

I am also in the process of moving things to a more central location. Kids have left so my only consideration is leaving lots of playing and staying places for my 2 grandchildren with 2 more on the way. Love this life.

Its kind of trial and error you will move it around a few times probable til it fits the way you work

There are a few books out there on how to set up your sewing space. You might want to look them up online.

Personally, I purposely keep my ironing area away from my sewing area just so that I have to get up and move. Only with a crazy quilt or similar project will it be relatively nearby.

Remember your ergonomics: have the sewing machine, the cutting surface, and the ironing area proper height for your use. Then, if you can, invest in a good chair!
