I use a single thread, but use a good strong quilting thread.

GemState 09-19-2011 05:13 AM

Double, and I thread the needle with the doubled threads so I can begin without having a knot. (I hate knots!) Just take the first stitch and go through the loop when starting.

It usually takes several evenings to hand-finish the binding on the back, but I know it's on there to stay. :D I'm not very skilled at piecing and only intermediate in FMQ skills - but this is the one thing I do pretty well.

That's the way I do it too. I think using a single strand allows for tinier stitches (closer together). So far, so good. I guess only time will tell....

I hand sew to the back using a single strand of hand quilting thread treated with thread heaven or beeswax. I ladder stitch because it is nearly invisble.

Bren 09-19-2011 05:38 AM

I use a single strand and tiny slip stitch; no prob so far.

Rose Ann 09-19-2011 06:14 AM

marscrafter - thanks for the tutorial. Will use it for my next project.

jad1044 09-19-2011 06:26 AM

I always use a double thread, but if it is a quilt that will be used daily, require many washings, etc, I do it on the machine; I feel it is stronger if done by machine to withstand all the wear and tear it will recieve.

grumpy90650 09-19-2011 06:57 AM

never even thought about using double thread....maybe i will try that on my next quilt......

KathyKat 09-19-2011 07:49 AM

I use double thread for the binding.

I use a single thread as well. If the quilt is getting a lot of use, I use a 50 wt. polyester. As long as you use quality, strong thread, it shouldn't be a problem. I have found using beeswax or Thread Heaven isn't necessary and it washes out in the first wash.

 I have done 2 bindings, sewed them buy hand.. I know it would be faster, with machine....Jean1234

jamsbuying 09-19-2011 09:04 AM

single thread or totally by machine sewing binding to back first, turning over to front and using a decorative stitch.

Quilter Lois 09-19-2011 09:07 AM

I find that Thread Heaven is good but expensive. You might want to try using an unused dryer sheet and running the thread thru it a couple of timed. It works pretty well like the Thread Heaven.

yetta 09-19-2011 09:13 AM

I use a single thread and ladder stitch....so far havehad no problems with bindings not holding up....

Iamquilter 09-19-2011 09:40 AM

Single thread always.

Drew 09-19-2011 09:48 AM

I use a single thread. Haven't had any problems!

Lucy90 09-19-2011 10:27 AM

I use double thread and Thread Heaven so it doesn't tangle as much.

MargeD 09-19-2011 10:35 AM

I use one strand of sewing thread and use a tiny blind/whip stitch to sew down the binding.

Joan Gaddis 09-19-2011 10:49 AM

i use single thread

 Ditto. Only time I have trouble with double thread knotting is when I use too long of thread. Machine stich front, hand sew back. BrendaK

Doreen 09-19-2011 11:07 AM

I used to use a single thread but now it's almost always machine done.

Jeandrig 09-19-2011 11:08 AM

A long time ago, I was told to use single thread when hemming pants because the double thread can rub against each other and break easier. Don't know if thats true or not. But if it is, binding with a single cotton quilting thread is all that is necessary.

ghostrider 09-19-2011 11:49 AM

Single thread, 40wt cotton handquilting thread, blind stitching about ⅛" apart. Has lasted 40 years so far on one quilt I have.

Debo 09-19-2011 12:19 PM

Never thought of using a double thread. I use a single thread but I think I will use a double thread next time.

lklos303 09-19-2011 01:00 PM

I sew all my bindings with a single thread. Have had no problems and have given many quilts away.

I use single thread. I had to snip one apart not long ago to repair something. snipped one thread thinking I could pull it apart to have enought room to make repair..... not on your life, I had to rip out inches, It was in there strong as could be.

quilter65 09-19-2011 04:26 PM

I usually use quilting thread a single strand and it holds very well. I have a quilting friend that uses silk thread.

SheilaZ 09-19-2011 05:09 PM

I also use a single thread. Just finished binding two wall quilts.

deedum 09-19-2011 05:34 PM

I use single strand and never had a problem. Make sure your using good quality thread and it shouldn't be a problem!

wvdek 09-19-2011 06:16 PM

I use a single strand and I use the stitch that Missouri Star Quilts uses for binding. She has a good tut on it on YouTube.

I found a way to keep double thread from tangling, don't know where I learned it.

It's simple: knot each thread separately. It's worked for me for years.

ConnieF 09-20-2011 03:16 AM

O only use single thread the blks are single thread but I do knot ever ince or so

Winkee 09-22-2011 05:37 PM

I also use a blind stitch with double thread. It seems logical that it would be stronger.

Luscious Marilyn 09-26-2011 03:55 AM

I use double thread also. I really don't have room or need so many different color of thread spools, so I purchase embroidery thread in the color to match.
