Sewing black on black

I am in process of making a Jacobs Ladder in reds & black. In joining the rows I cannot see whether they are lined up even or not! Any hints on this problem or is it just my old eyes & bad lighting? Thanks for any suggestions ladies!

I also have a problem with black fabrics. I have to have a LOT of light, so I take the OTT lamp out of my retreat kit for extra light. I have the worst time ripping black stitches out of black fabric.

I use a medium grey thread on top and black in the bobbin when sewing black fabric. I fine this quilt helpful.

I don't use totally black thread on black but more of a dark grey - not quite black - as it is easier to see if I ever need to rip and resew.

My Bernina has LED or similar lights and I love it! When working on black I also clip on my Bernina magnifying lens set. As other have mentioned perhaps an OTT light at your machine might help. They do sell little adjustable lights that clip onto your glasses now for sewing also.
Try pinning at the seams since you can feel the lump of the seam allowances.

Sometimes I also take my chalk marker & run it along places that I need to match up. Especially if I'm doing black on black machine appliqué. I'm not sure if that would help with your current problem or not.

I do this too. Probably doesn't help with the lining up of fabric, but sure helps with the seam ripping!

Glad to know i'm not the only one who struggles with black fabrics/quilts !! Although it would be nice if NONE of us had the problem!

I heard that lighting is most of the issue, I have horrible lighting so you might try to get a better lamp or something that might help with lighting.
