I'm a dining room quilter at this time. No room anywhere else in the house until kids start moving out. I can only sew for a while and my back is killing me. I'm know the table is to high but I wonder if a different chair would at least help til I can get the space for the right table. What kind of chair would you all suggest?

I have a 4 legged wooden stool. I found one that the bottom fit my bottom, then had my honey cut off the legs a little at a time until the height was perfect for me. Nuthin' fancy, but I like it.

How about a computer chair? They adjust up and down and are gennerally very comfortable. Plus you can roll around to the ironing board and cutting table.

I use a cheap, no arm, adjustible computer desk chair. Well worth the 39 dollar price.

A computer chair....why didn't I think of that. I bet it will get stolen and the kids will have it in front of the computer!

I bought mine at a discount store for $10.00. BUT I had to spend about an hour getting the white dog hair (terrier or some sort) off of it. I had to use heavy duty TAPE to remove.

Write on the back of it "MOM'S QUILTING CHAIR!!! REMOVE UPON PENALTY OF NO ALLOWANCE" and I bet it stays put! lol

Shelly,
I defineately recommend an office chair that is adjustable. I have gotten them at yard sales, second hand stores and finally Staples. They often have sales of less than $100. It is the best money you will ever spend. To sew, serge and embroider I have my chair in the middle between two tables. The serger and embroidery machine are on one wall. The sewing machine is on a table that is in free standing so I have room to drape quilt projects. I swivel my chair back and forth between the machines. I have a chronic autoimmune disease that makes me have major muscle problems. The chair allows me to sew longer as I can sit at the height etc. best to relieve any kind of arm, neck and back strain. My sewing tables are fold up ones from Staples also. My husband who is a machinest cut the legs down to make them just the right height for me. The chair I use at my computer is one of the ones I got second hand for about $20. It would have probably cost several hundred dollars new. Good luck |
something else that might help -
a small bench or riser for your feet - maybe 2 to 4 inches high - might make a difference. |
i have a computer chair it works wonderful got mine at Office Depot

I use one of those old kitchen step-stools that the seat flips up and you have a couple steps to reach the cabinet over the fridge. Sitting at the very edge of it puts me at just the right height to sew with no back or neck aches at all. My kid used it at mealtime post-highchair and pre-grownup chair...thirty some-odd years ago. Guess I just prefer harder surfaced seats than most.

I use a computer chair also. Love it.

Do invest in a decent quality adjustable chair, preferable one with a forward tilt motion so that the back will come forward to support you when you lean forward to sew. Your leg should be flat from your hip to your knee. THen , if your feet don't reach the floor, use a foot prop of some sort (any kind of box or even books work just fine). It is also very important to make sure you have your arm/wrists supported properly when you are sewing and that the machine is the right height for your neck.
Can you tell that I used to sell office furniture for a living and we dealt with ergonomic issues every day??? Myself, I use an adjustable chair with adjustable arms that swivel around out of the way if necessary...love it..from Haworth. (Pricey, but I got it when I was a rep for them) |
Yep, get an office chair. Adjusts up and down, and so do the arms. I even haul mine to retreats. Worth every penny, no matter how much you spend!!!

:D I use a dining room chair, but I spend over a year looking for a for a table and chair set that didn't hurt my back if I sat in it for a long amount of time. I also keep my foot (or feet depending on the sewing machine I'm using that day) elevated on another dining chair.
If a computer chair is what you need by all means spring for it. |
I have a fold up metal chair that was given to us by a neighbor. I have a pillow on it so my tushy doesn't hurt. I keep saying I am going to nab the computer chair in Courtney's room but keep forgetting to do it. Actually, I don't want to open the door to her room. Lord only knows what will come out. Haven't been in her room since she left.

I use a computer chair and a pillow too.

I use a nice, height-adjustable computer chair! It's perfect for me.

Starting to sound like a broken record but I use an adjustable office/computer chair that fits my fanny. Got it 10+yrs ago at Office Depot for about $60.00.

I have a computer chair, but if your back is giving you trouble, it could be a posture thing. I sometimes find myself sitting in a position that my mother would say "sit up straight" to. Try putting a cushion by your lower spine.

Thank you all for the suggestion of a computer chair. I got one this week and tried it out today. It's working great! Thanks. :-)
