I think it is great that she gets to do this, especially since schools no longer teach a home economics class that includes sewing. Too many kids are growing up watching television or playing video games instead of picking up a worthwhile hobby.

Olivia's Grammy 01-30-2010 05:17 PM

How old is she? I teach children, right now my youngest student is 9. She is very quick to catch on. She want to make a quilt so she can "model" it at the Sewing Expo in March.

samroberts01 01-30-2010 05:17 PM

Yes I agree, I am trying to keep them active in a sport and also encourage them in another activity. I didnt have the chance to do those things growing up but wish I had. She is very excited about it, and it is a place that can grow with her and thier goal is to get them onto fashion school after highschool. So it is definatly a great place for her to learn!

Oh she is so pretty so glad she is into sewing i totaly agree with MistyMarie(:)u done a good job Sweetie

Boston1954 01-30-2010 06:10 PM

She has gotten the bug early. She has many happy quilting years ahead of her.

JanetM 01-30-2010 06:18 PM

Well, look at you Racquel...you are adorable.

I think it's great that she is learning how to sew at her age. Sewing may become a life long hobby for her and one day we'll see her posting on this site.

I would love to see pictures of other things she learns to make.

samroberts01 01-30-2010 06:20 PM

I will definatly be posting pictures of what she is making, I think my younger daughter is also going to do this, but I wanted them to be in diffrent classes so she will probably start soon too!

janRN 01-30-2010 07:33 PM

I am so happy that your daughter is starting to sew. I can't believe that the schools no longer have home ec or shop classes or art lessons. Talk about the "dumbing down of America"!! Sorry-have to get off my soapbox.

You have every right to be proud of her--we all are. Keep on posting her projects, we'd all love to see them. Thanks.

I started teaching DGD to sew when she was five. She got a Sew Mini machine of her own. This year for Christmas she got my sons Janome (it's full size). She loves to sew right along side me and I love having her there.

mimee4 01-31-2010 07:47 AM

Excellent class. Safety first. She will enjoy sewing so much more if she is careful.

samroberts01 01-31-2010 08:04 AM

Yes it is important to understand how to be safe with it all at that age too. They also taught her the basics like the parts of a sewing machine and had them sew on some printed lines in diffrent shapes, so all and all she got alot of information from a 2 hour class. She goes again next saturday and gets to make a project, I think she said they were making puppets or something.

Good for you, Rachel! Keep it up! Nicely done pincushion!

samroberts01 02-01-2010 10:55 AM

hehe... thanks it is Racquel (smiles) alot of people call her Rachel! It is like Racquel Welch.

ToucanSam 02-01-2010 10:59 AM

How fun! And she is adorable! I hope she loves sewing and (?) quilting. :)

samroberts01 02-01-2010 11:05 AM

She has mentioned she would like to do the quilt for kids thing that I did. So next time I do one I am going to have her help me with the peicing. I think by that time she will be sewing pretty well!

Oops! That'll teach me to read too fast!

Margie 02-01-2010 08:50 PM

What a great idea! I think all children should learn a "hobby" especially a useful one. It also is something she can enjoy WITH mama. She is absolutely adorable.

I agree with you. I suppose it's because I was a Home Economics teacher (my first career). The home ec. curriculum has changed to more psychology and sociology-based studies. Actually (IMHO) they are teaching many things that should be taught at home -- if you know what I mean.

I understand that some few HE teachers are still incorporating (on their own) a little of the sewing and cooking in their curriculum. And I say "more power to them."

Lneal 02-02-2010 02:17 AM

This is a lost art for most young girls. That is wonderful she made a pin cushion!!

NauDeeGal 02-02-2010 03:32 AM

Way to go, Raquel! Nice job on the pincushion!

Looking forward to seeing more of your project pictures!

It is great to see young people get into hobbies like this!

samroberts01 02-02-2010 06:46 AM

I am so glad she is learning this, because as you all are saying they dont teach it in school anymore, when I was in junior high I think I had like a few weeks where they taught us how to make a hat? That was my only sewing experience till I started my quilting a few months ago! I am so glad I did!

I started to sew at her age - started with Barbie doll clothes, then my clothes. I hope she loves it as much as I do, and will be with it 40 years later!

wolverine 02-02-2010 02:52 PM

Nice going Racquel. You may be the Third sewer in the family as your Aunt Jean and Cousin Mancy can both sew. Keep up the good work. Some day you may be a designed.

Stitchnripper 02-02-2010 03:35 PM

She is darling and so is her pincushion. Nice job!!

mimisharon 02-02-2010 03:43 PM

Great job, Racquel!! You are just the age I was when Mom let me begin to use her sewing machine. I must have made 100 pair of toddler panties that first year. Then I got to high school and learned to follow a pattern for clothing and I was hooked for life. I hope you'll enjoy it and continue for the rest of your life. I had learned to hand embroider at about age 6. We didn't have much but we always had thread and needles. They will get you through a lot of boredom and you'll have a gift for every birthday and holiday.

Keep it up and do share your fun with us.

sewgull 02-02-2010 05:42 PM

Beautiful young lady. Keep up the interest in sewing you can entertain yourself forever.

maryb119 02-02-2010 05:48 PM

Good for you, Racquel!!! Sewing is so much fun!!! I used to teach beginning sewing classes for kids each summer at the quilt shop I used to work at. I never heard "I can't" from the kids but I heard it from adults everyday. Kids are willing to try something new and love the finished results. You go girl!!

thread 02-03-2010 12:56 PM

It is a good thing for young girls to know how to sew because that way they can make their own clothes and quilts and any thing they want to, please keep up the good wook Rachel and mom. It is very sad that schools no longer teach classes like this for kids to look forward to.

I agree, I had so much fun in school with sewing.

blahel 02-03-2010 03:05 PM

what a shame they dont teach sewing in school :-( that is where I learnt and even though i didnt start quilting until 30 years later I still remember what i learnt!
It is so nice that you are encouraging your daughter to sew. I tried to get my sons interested...

mamahippychicky 02-03-2010 04:13 PM

Most of the High Schools round here have Fabric Technology as an option. My daughter took it last year (1st year High School) and it was half year. She made pincushion, boxer shorts and a hoody. She must have enjoyed it as she won an award at end of year and is taking it this year.

samroberts01 02-03-2010 04:18 PM

Wow that is cool! They offer alot of diffrent programs here but no sewing, but these classes are designed to take her through highschool.

mamahippychicky 02-03-2010 04:33 PM

We are lucky that they still offer sewing and cooking at High School here. I was surprised at how many of Laura's friends were taking them as options - and felt reassured that skills aren't being lost completely
