My DH is going to build me a sewing/cutting table. My sewing machine sits on top of the table, what is a good height for this combination? It will be L shaped with an area for sewing and the other area for cutting.

it should be at the height about 4-6 inchest below your bent elbow, that way you will not have backstrain

There really isn't a good height for a combo sewing/cutting table. If it's high enough for cutting, it's too high for sewing. If it's the right height for sewing it's way too low for cutting. You want both to be at just below elbow height either seated or standing.

Maybe he can make the 2 sections seperatly and each at their respective heights, and then bolt them together in the L-shape...or just place them together, no bolts.

I am hoping to get my DH to do the same thing...I am planning to have him use some reasonably priced cabinets under my cutting table so that I can have some covered (read hidden) storage!
Good luck with your project...and remember to share pics with us!

What about building it at cutting height, having a drafting chair to match that height, and using a platform for your foot control? That's what Koala has in their new line.

For cutting you need a higher table. I had an old DR Table and we put blocks of wood under the legs to boost it up. My back was killing me and since we raised it its fine. Sewing at a table that high would never work.

My main cutting table is made from a kitchen cabinet base, with a counter top on it. We got it at Menards on clearance, It is the perfect height and work area, has drawers and a cabinet underneath it. Very good deal on price to.

I have two long bouffet tables in an "L" shape, and I bought 4 bed risers (cheap-K-mart or Bed Bath and Beyone has them, as well as many others) and when I want to cut, I simply put one of the tables on the risers-it is easily done and I can do it by myself without any problem. Sometimes I also will use the risers under the legs of the kitchen table, which is wider if I need it.
