Thanks for the pin and stylist hints.

That really hurts. I did that when I was learning to sew ... on my Mom's tredle machine ... right through the nail. Fortunately, it didn't deter me, and I've been sewing for almost 70 years.
Unfortanately I have sewn my finger a couple of times. One time it took 2 stitches before I got stopped. It hurts a lot after the feeling comes back.

I too have sewn my finger with the needle several times. I was lucky I had a pair of hemostats on hand. It was hard to pull it out, I had to pull it through the other side, I was so good at sewing it. Frequent hand washing is what saved me, and lots of pressure to stop the bleeding. I didn't even worry if I got blood on the quilt; it hurt too much.
Yikes! I've done this and had to take out a stitch before I could get my finger out from under the machine!
Ouch! How painful for you! I said a prayer for you!
I'm sorry, that will be sore for a few days. You are doing the right thing, taking a break then getting back to it.
That makes me queezy just thinking about it!! Be careful!!
I wonder if since so many of us have had the experience if we could put together some safety instructions for all who consult the Quilting Board to read?
It could help prevent similar injuries in others - does anyone know if any of the state or federal quilting associations have put any PS/prevention info on safety for machine quilters? I be sewn finger is a more prevalent injury than we might think, give the response today! Maurene |
owie. don't you know that hurts like the dickens?
I have done the same thing!

Ouch, ooey, cringe, yikes.
sorry for the damage to your hand. Be sure to keep it clean so you don't get an infection. I guess that's one reason I like older machines the action isn't usally that fast. My Viking mega quilter is like a machine gun. I have slowed it down, but man it can really go. I've got to be really careful.
I did that too. Sure makes a sore finger. and my poor little nail never has grown back right since. Good lesson if it didn't do permanent damage.
Oh Liz!!! OUCH!!!

When I was 5 years old I was using a treadle machine and ran the needle thru my finger. My Mom took the needle out of the machine- leaving it my finger. Took me into the bathroom and extracted the needle- poured on peroxide and then sent me back to finish my sewing!
If she had said" That's what you get for playing with the machine" I probably would never have developed a love for sewing. Evelyn |
I did the same thing. Finger didn't hurt, it just stopped the machine. Could see only a piece of thread sticking from the nail. X-ray showed the needle point buried deep into the bone. Dr. had one H--- of a time removing it. Said he nearly exhausted all of his equipment in doing so. Didn't really hurt until the next morning. A bit more careful since.
Ouch, I am so sorry, please take your break and relax before you go back. God bless. Penny

I did nearly the same thing-only my left thumb got caught under the bolt that holds the needle as the needle came down. The machine locked up with my thumb crushed and couldn't budge it for the life of me! After a minute or two of trying (which seemed like an hour or two!), I "CALMLY" called out for my DH to "PLEASE COME IN HERE FOR A MOMENT", which he naturally took his sweet time, since I didn't have that sense of urgency in my voice. After another minute or two, he finally figured how to get my thumb out--sheer brute strength! Now, I know if I sounded distressed, he would have come running in a panic! But then, after the crises was over, he would have laughed and wondered what all the fuss was about, and lightly chastised me for interrupting his TV! LOL

I was teaching sewing in high school in a regular classroom. The portable machines were installed on desks in the back of the class. One of my pupils called me ’Miss, come here, please!. One of the girls had sewn the tip of her finger.I nearly fainted removing the needle. I'm still very prudent when I sew.
Sorry to here that. I know it hurts.
I did that a few years back. It was my middle finger on my left hand. I jumped and it just ripped out the side. Been ever so careful since then. After 55 Years I guess once isn't bad.

I have also done this , but the needle didn't break ! I was sewing lace on a doll dress . Dummy me didn't pin or baste the lace , I was holding it and sewing . My son was a toddler at the time and distracted me and boom sewed my finger clear through ! I had to take the needle out to free my finger . So everyone be careful . Annie
Ouch - been there and done that too! I wouldn't even open my eyes to look - LOL! I thought my poor husband was going to faint because the thread was still stuck in my fingertip! Be careful to watch for infection too.

I'm really sorry about your finger, BUT.. is the machine okay, !!! See, we quilters always know where our prorities are. LOL... I am sorry about the bo-bo.... but you really don't need to bleed into your machine instead of oiling it.
This takes me back some years before my son wass even close to going away. He's a paramedic by trade and career ffor the local fire dept. and his wife is an e.r. nurse. I was trimming up some spare ribs with a new set of knives and I missed somehow and the blodd just started. Blood every where and I called my son and Les is telling him, you better get over your mother cannot stop the bleeding. So Mr wonderful and my wonderful daughter in law came right over and I hsd towel wrapped around my hand forpressure, and he looks a me and says, come on now mom, it's not like you cut your finger, let me see it. So he and Ronda were trying to slow the the bleeding down snd it just had a mind of it's. Finally he looks down asnd he goes white snd he's almost screaming asnd telling me, Mom you cut the flipping top of your finger off and there';s not way the stitch it back. My kitchen looked like a butch shop. Well, we did manage to slow the bleeding down and it finslly stopped. So Ronda was trying to clean me up up and Les was doing kitchen duty to try to clean up everything snd anything that the would have to lhave rolled in and that kind of silliness. a few minutes later Les ran into the small bathroom and grab Matt telling him he found my finger. It was mixed in with the spare ribs, Obviously the spare ribs were not cooked, but neither Matthrew. Les, Ronda nor I felt like cooking any more fter that. LOL.. |
Double ouch - been there done that, only my needle didn't break. Bluestarmom - triple ouch. Glad I haven't done that!
ouch !! i can say i have not done that yet but always wondered while i was fmq if it could happen now i know the answer, i think you need a day off of your from your quilting!
OMG! That is terrible! I'm so sorry. I sure hope it feels better now. Knock on wood I have never got a needle through my nail but I have skinned it on the side of my finger before. Just a warning for me. Take care
Quilting lore says that if you get ablood on your quilt while making it you have to throw it over the pitch of your house to drive evil spirits away.
I also sewed my finger a few weeks ago. Needle broke in my finger when it fractured the bone. Had to go to urgent care to have th needle removed and x-rays. They said this type of injury has a high risk of infection and some quilters have had to have there fingers amputated because of infection. I was put on anitbiotics for 15 days and also have to see a hand surgeon. I have needle guards on all my machines now.
I did that once while sewing a red skirt. When I got to the ER the nurse asked if it was a designer skirt with flesh? It was just a good thing the fabric was red! So I truly know what you must be feeling. Hope you don't get an infection.
Oh no.
yes i have right through the thumb I forgot there was a thread cutter on the side of tyhe mac hine it had made a stitch through my thumb. scissors were on the other side of the kitchen so i went overm there thread and all.it didnt break the needle. i was useing moms old white machine it happened years ago rosefrench

Eeeeeew! Makes me hurt just reading about the needle in the finger. I've come close, had the needle slide off the fingernail. Boy! if that doesn't keep a person wide awake for the rest of the sewing.
Yiiiikes!!! I did that 45 years ago when 8 months pregnant with a 10 pound baby boy!!! Needle stuck in my middle finger underneath the nail pushing through fabric on an old machine...hubby pulled out the needle and proceeded to faint lol, lol!
I am so glad I posted that I sewed my finger, I have loved reading everyones stories and found out mine was minor compared so some of y'alls. Still a little sore but healing great.
I did that and had to go to the er to get it out. It went right though the middle of my finger nail and took a stitch. I had thread, broken needle and broken finger. Not a good thing.
Oh , OUCHY ! Annie
