Not necessary to take super small stitches - 12-14 stitches to the inch are more than short enough.
My machine defaults to 2.5 - 2.0 would be very adequate.

I'm glad this question was asked because I've been thinking to use flannel too as backings for Linus project since I don't know how to quilt..I do stitch in the ditch and it's getting expensive to make that many projects when u buy batting and backings as well for other charitable projects. I use JA coupons to buy flannel but like now, they're on sale. It's getting very hard at guild to find anyone willing to longarmer your small tops.

I have used flannel and cottons in rag quilts several times when I couldn't find the right fabric in flannel. I did not pre wash and didn't seem to have a problem when I washed them. Maybe it was the quality of flannel I bought. If the members on this board suggest pre washing, then I would say pre wash. They are really smart.

Prism99, THANK YOU for your post to Zozee about the how to stabilize her flannel. I'm getting ready to use some flannel, so I'm off to get some Sta-Flo. I've been putting this off because I don't enjoy fighting the wiggle or stretching of the flannel.

Prism, Really helpful suggestion! I am going to try that.

Rule of thumb is that flannel will shrink atleast 1"/yard. Yes, hot water wash and hi heat dry!
However, if you are going to use the starching method to piece, please wash it out before donating your piece to "Linus". :thumbup:
