Sewing furniture

Hi all, I was wondering where to purchase a sewing table from that isn't cheap but doesn't cost a fortune either. Thanks in advance.

ragamuffin 01-28-2017 02:52 PM

I would check craigslist in your area. In the space type in sewing machines. Do you attend garage sales or resale shops?
Great places to find those featherweights. In our area, in DE, there are a lot listed, even featherweights and commercial machines. Good luck.

For a basic table (not a storage cabinet) I really like my SewEZI
http://www.seweziusa.com/?gclid=COub...FcS4wAodLv8A9A
Very sturdy. The design is well thought out. I sew in the dining room, so occasionally I need to vacate the premises. The table is portable, comes with its own bag, which makes moving it a breeze. I have a Viking Diamond, which is a pretty big machine and the table doesn't wiggle or dance.

Although I like the Koala, Horn or Arrow tables, they just don't seem worth the money to me. If I'm paying that much, I want wood, not wood particle board! I've also seen ones that are wood at quilt shows - they are gorgeous, but holy cow, that's my sewing budget for years and years.

In all honesty, I'd look at making one from a table, desk, or cabinet (which is what I did). There are several threads here that will give you ideas, also on Pinterest. I think you can end up with something much sturdier with a lot of room, fit to your needs. The costliest part of mine, and worth it, is the acrylic insert from DreamWorld. They have them made specifically for whatever model machine you have for a perfect fit.

best sewing table i ever had was the vintage dining table i my grandfather bought for me from a used furniture store. wish i still had it ..but it disapeared years ago on one of our many job related moves. so ..check used furniture stores or thrift shops for tables.

Are you looking for a permanent table or a portable? My Janome MC6600 came with a table. The machine fits into the table, but the table does not fold up. When I bought my Viking Topaz I bought the SewEZ portable table (when you buy it they ask you what machine you have and then provide a plexi piece to fit your machine). It is a very sturdy table - it is heavy but there are wheels at the end so you don't have to lift it much. There is a cover and it has a pocket to put the insert in. And I sometimes use the SewEZ with my Janome table when I need the additional support.

quiltingcandy 01-28-2017 03:36 PM

What kind of machine do you have? Before I had my Janome I had a Singer and just bought a cabinet for it.

If you were closer to the Front Range of Colorado, I could give you either a Horn or a Koala Lite - FREE

Joann's carries a well rated table for $99 right now. http://www.joann.com/homespun-gidget...8.html#start=1 I don't own it, but I have looked at this one repeatedly.

Depending on where you are in Nevada, I'd second the suggestion to look on Craigslist. In my area, there are empty (no machine in them) vintage cabinets some with drawers , fancier newer tables, and dining tables. I would search on just "sewing," that will pull up everything sewing related (plus cars that "run like a sewing machine"). But also search on "table" and "desk" for dining tables, wooden desks, computer desks, and others. And, surprisingly, some things that will pop up in the "Free" section.

My wife and I love our Martelli tables. They are expensive, but if you're not in a hurry they have one or two half price sales every year.

Before we moved, I had a desk (40" x 60") that had been cut out to fit my machine with a board underneath to make the machine level with the top. I did not have the room here for that big a piece of furniture so I have the large Gidget table and it works. The desk was cool because I could fit my 24x36 cutting mat on it too.

IKEA has great, inexpensive, yet sturdy tables. They are portable, lightweight, and store nearly flat as the legs detach via a simple screw in style.

meanmom 01-29-2017 06:18 AM

I was going to suggest IKEA. There are tons of ideas on pinterest and on here to set up exactly what you need. A friend made me a table. Mine fits in a corner of my sewing room. Lots of space behind the machine for when I am FMQ. He needed a bridesmaid dress altered. I pretty much had to remake the whole dress. He made me my table in exchange. I am slowly adding IKEA pieces to it.

I went to Goodwill and bought a large desk with a side piece and believe it or not it is great. And the best the total 9.99. The top was scratched and yukky looking so I put some peel and stick floor tile and it works wonderful.

hray 01-29-2017 08:01 AM

I bought from Tracey's Tables about 2 years ago. They delivered all the way to NM, brought it into the sewing room, set it up ( put on the drawer knobs...not a lot of setup!) and it's a great table. I really enjoy it. It's not cheap, but not nearly the price of the high-end tables.

I'd looked into Craigslist, but I have a large machine and most of the cutouts in existing tables won't fit it. Machine is a Brother VQ3000.

I made a sewing table using an IKEA table and love it. I got the basic directions off the internet and then modified it a bit to suit my machine. If you can use a jig saw (and I used a router to finish but you can do it without) an a screwdriver and wrench it is doable. My machine came with the acrylic extension. If yours doesn't have something like that then just cut the hole to go around the machine. Here's a link to the tutorial http://frommartawithlove.com/2012/10...able-tutorial/ Here's a picture of mine.

I just purchased this one on Amazon and I'm very pleased.

I found one online for $300. I love it. It has the shelf that recesses for making machine level with the table. It's manual not motorized. If that is not too much money I will look up the model for you and where I purchased for you.

I have one that looks like this one, but I think maybe an Arrow? I paid about that much for it a few years back, from Allbrands (no affiliation). I can adjust it for my machines, but sometimes it is easier to put a magazine under a low one. It is pretty sturdy. I haven't tried folding it up. No need for me.

maudeflanagan 01-29-2017 11:44 AM

JaniceP, that is an impressive looking table and a very reasonable price. Does the lower shelf reduce the leg room at all?

susanwilley 01-29-2017 11:51 AM

I bought a wooden kitchen table from Craigs List and had my son and his friend cut a whole in each end to set my machines in. It is a 36 x 60 I think and is really great for quilting a large quilt on. I paid about 90 dollars for it. Just be sure it is real wood if you want to cut a cut out for your sewing machine.

Carol34446 01-29-2017 12:09 PM

Often you can find computer tables and machine fits where keyboard goes and that works good and can be very reasonable. I have that folds up and one left in rental that doesn'. Problem I have now is no space in house to put them up and use them.

My brother is going to build a table for me using the pattern from Terry Hyer Design Alternatives. The top is 24 sf of space and it has storage. The storage is on three sides of the table. You can cut the top so your machine bed is level to the top. I chose not to do this because I sew with two different machines, Pfaff ands a Brother. I got the pattern from Keepsake Quilting. Another suggestion: my old sewing cabinet was an armoire with a fold down table. I got it from Dania and used it for 30 years until it was destroyed by a flood in our sower level. Just saw something similar at a thrift store yesterday.

I found some nice sewing furniture at the thrift shops that were donated by a hotel. I found a real nice dresser without mirror that had a middle clerical drawer and to the left had 3 large drawers. It was really nice as I could scoot a chair to the right side and have the drawers on the left side. It had a nice laminated top and was really nice. I only paid $20.00 for it. I ended up buying two so my husband could have it as a desk. Then bought two matching chest tablets for my sun porch for the same price. Good luck.

birdbytemom 01-29-2017 01:53 PM

I just recently purchased an extra sewing desk from Allbrands.com and I couldn't be more pleased. They have a large selection of sewing items from machines to furniture etc. They have become one of my favorite go-to shopping places. Hope you'll take a look.

gramma nancy 01-29-2017 05:54 PM

My sewing table is NOT portable, but a terrific, ultra-stable, large (30" x 72") surface that's terrific for all kinds of work.

It's an old cafeteria table that I pulled out of someone's trash pile at the curb. It weighs a bloody ton and was rusting along the lower edge and kind of grody on top. I sanded down the rust and painted the entire base. The grody top got a good scrubbing and a layer of clear press-on vinyl.

It ain't purdy, but I've been sewing on it for more than 15 years and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Moral of this story -- you don't need some $1500 (or more) "sewing furniture" to be a happy and successful quilter. You just need a stable surface that won't vibrate every time you put your foot on the pedal and that fits your space and your budget.

I found my Horn table on craigslist for $250. Needed a couple rollers and a good cleaning - it was in storage and they held drawers in and extensions down with duct tape, the glue residue was quite a challenge! I ordered an insert for it and I love it. But I had been looking for quite a while, so be patient.

jmoore 01-30-2017 03:24 AM

In December I purchased an Ethan Allen mahagony desk at an auction and paid $250. (It's original price was $3,000). Once my new sewing room is finished (estimated April), I plan to have a cutout so I can sink one of my machines into it.

Debbie C 01-30-2017 04:38 AM

I use a 1960's version of the Sew EZ table that my mother bought from JC Penney for $35. I will never get rid of it! It folds flat to store under my bed when not in use.

Aspen Leaf 01-30-2017 04:57 AM

I'm on the Front Range. Please PM.

Carol34446 02-25-2017 09:38 PM

I have a computer table that folds up, bought it used for $50.00 heavy and sturdy and machine goes in space for keyboard. Have one that doesn't fold too.

quilterpurpledog 02-26-2017 04:22 AM

My husband built mine. It is a l-shaped table. My machine sits down into it so it is flush. I can put a full size mat to the left of the machine. On the long leg to the right I have a small TV, my computer, a radio and a letter stacker for my 'office work' I have two sets of three drawers. One of the top drawers (on the left) is a pull out drawer with ironing board. I confess that I don't use that much because I need to move around so as not to be as sedentary. I also go upstairs whenever I need the bathroom (again to move around.). If I would do it again I would have him make a drawer for thread in the place of the ironing board. One really nice feature is that the two legs of the 'L' is that they can be taken apart for moving. And, we have moved several times since he built it. He used plywood and not compressed wood. It is my prized possession.

quilter94 05-31-2017 09:57 AM

Hi, Peaceandjoy. I understand your concern, but what I've found as a 58 year old woman, I do not like the dark wood on my cabinet. I need the white, as the incoming white sun light reflects back up to me. Our vision diminishes over the age of 30 and I require as much light as possible, even from my cabinets. Best of luck to you on the purchase that meets your requirements.
