I am attempting to free motion quilt on pot holders with insulbrite inside. There is also a layer of "Warm and Natural". I am using a new 90/14 needle which is what was recommended to me by my sewing machine shop. What I am experiencing is the skipping of stitches. I'll be going along for a few stitches and then I get "skippers" of various lengths. Does anyone have a solve for this?

Are your feed dogs down? If it's really thick, you might need to raise the foot pressure a little.

Sorry, I've never used both in the same project.

Try using a walking foot.

Wanted to know what to do, I just bought some Insul-brite. :?

The last time that happened to me it was because the needle was bent. I couldn't even tell it was bent. It only bent a tiny bit towards the bottom and it was barely noticeable. Once I changed it, all was well.

I know you mentioned the needle is new, but apparently mine was bent when I got it or during the fist row of the quilted potholder I did.

More Info: The feed dogs are down, I am using the Bernina BSR and I have experimented with various presser foot pressures. I'll try another needle, if I have another. I may have to wait until I go out on Wednesday to get one. I started out with such high hopes for my project and now I'm just unhappy! :(

Everything that I have read recommends the layer of Warm and Natural ALONG with the Insulbrite. I guess that I can't argue with that, as I'd be looking for the most protection from a hot oven rack as I could. I guess that my error is in trying to free motion quilt over that combo.

you may need to experiment with different threads and/or tension settings.

my freemotion quilting makes a sewage plant smell like roses it stinks so bad. sooooo ... that was stolen from the advice many other people here who actually have FM skills often offer in cases like yours.

When I make my pot holders, I just use the warm and natural. No problem.
