You might be able to use a top stitch or jeans needle. Using a teflon foot also helps alot

All good tips, but if you don't have or can't buy a Teflon foot, use a strip of wax paper over/under the leather. It really helps to keep the leather from sticking to the sewing machine or the foot. Depends which side is up.

heaviest duty machine you have, a leather needle (usually a 16 or higher with a special point) and a thicker thread (a poly is suggested as the cotton can fray if the leather is very thick or stiff) and you can't rip stitches out without it showing holes afterward.

Thanks everyone. I am wondering if I can, if I should do a flat felled seam or would one ordinary seam be strong enough? I do have extra leather so I could try to see if the machine will go through all the layers. Thanks for any extra expertise.

I suggest to use a flat felled seam. It will still look nice and you won't have the bulk.

Some of the youtubes you can download. If that's the case maybe you can go to a store or fast food where they have free wifi and download them

I have seen leather needles for sewing machines at JoAnns.

It depends on the thickness of the leather, but yes, highly recommended to get a leather needle. You often need a point that cuts through the leather since you're not simply poking a hole between woven threads.
