Buying a used machine from a dealer is a great way to get a lot more for your money. If they don't offer some kind of warrenty ask for one... and get it in writing.

Something else to consider with your budget is going to a licensed dealer shop. A quilt shop near me is a licensed Janome dealer and they recondition and warranty used machines. You might get more bang for your buck that way. I lucked into a used Janome MC 6600P for $350 that way. I love it.

This would be my advice also. It's important to have someone local to work on your machine if need be. Also, some sort of warranty would be great! It's nice to have a good relationship with a local repair shop. Good luck with you search and welcome to the QB.

I have a Brother SQ9000, bought in July of 2010. $199.00 before tax at Walmart. It has 80 stitches, and all kinds of feet etc. I LOVE it!!!

Welcome to the quilting bug club. I was in your position almost two years ago. I researched and looked til I was blue in the face. I have had the opprotunity to sew on Janomes and Berninas and have not found much difference in them between my trusted Blue. He is a Brother CS 6000i. I love love love him. This machine has been through it all and never let me down. I got it online with tons of attachments and the table for around $300.00. Hope this helps.
